Web Hosting for E-Commerce Sites

If you’re going to pursue an e-commerce site, hosting is going to be an issue. Here’s a primer on web hosting for your site.

E-commerce web hosting is the technology of storing, servicing and maintaining files for one or more web sites selling products or services online. Web site owners who pay for a web host (generally on a monthly basis) upload their web pages to a shared or dedicated web server through an ISP (internet service provider). The web host should ensure a fast and consistent connection. Experienced web entrepreneurs desire flexibility, security and high performance from an e-commerce host. An e-commerce web server also stores information, images, videos and just about any other content that can be retrieved from a web site. Security is a priority for e-commerce web servers.

E-commerce web hosting can be divided into two major components, the site and the host (where the site is stored for access on the web). Web hosts are computers that offer storage space and Internet connectivity. Web hosts make your web site work with and connect to the Internet. E-commerce, or web commerce, allows people to buy goods and services online. On the Internet, one can buy almost anything, at any time.

E-commerce web hosting must support e-commerce software. Often a web host will provide the tools that handle online transactions and sales. In other cases, the web business owner is on their own to ascertain e-commerce software. Common tools that are provided with e-commerce web hosting are shopping carts, business account services, SSLs (secure socket layers), secure transactions, web promotion applications and advertisement packages.

While choosing a web hosting company for your E-commerce business, it is helpful to decide how much data storage is required and the data transfer rates you require for your site. A web host is the physical location of a web site, so you must be confident in the connection and security of the hosting company. Doing some research to make sure that data reaches the end-user quickly and efficiently can payoff in a big way. Backup systems should be in place so that data is routed even if there is a router failure. Web hosts should be able to accommodate a client’s web traffic (measured in volume of data transfer) in peak hours as well.

Security is a major issue for E-commerce transactions. Private information needs to be kept safe from unauthorized parties. SSL, from Netscape, helps a lot with secure transactions. SSL is an encryption technology that encodes a message that a receiver decrypts by using RSA security. For integrity and authentication of messages, digital signatures, or certificates, are required. Digital signatures ensure that sensitive information is not picked up by any other party, by posing as a legitimate e-business or in any other way. A digital certificate is a document, issued by a certificate authority, which recognizes a legitimate online business. To ensure security, many web companies store confidential information on offline disks or on a separate PC. E-commerce web hosts should also maintain multiple backups of vital information. SSL uses PKI (public key infrastructure) and digital certificates to ensue privacy and authentication. Bear in mind that security can be an expensive and complex business.

In short, when selecting an e-commerce web host it is often best to look for a pre-packaged solution that allows you to create a shopping cart, an online catalog and a secure credit card transaction and storage system. Selecting an e-commerce web host with a broad range of tools and a solid reputation is an important step for just about any e-business.

Traditional Wedding Anniversary Gift

Filed under: Anniversaries, Relationships — Jen Carter @ 9:53 pm

A traditional wedding anniversary gift varies annually. There are certain characteristics of each gift’s description for couples to follow each year. Many couples follow traditional guidelines very carefully. Although it may be considered a little ‘old fashioned,’ these guidelines have been around for many years. Older and younger couples make use of these suggestions to employ tradition. As they’ve been around for many years already, these traditional anniversary suggestions will be around for many more years to come.

Traditional couples are encouraged to be clever with their gift ideas. After all, many traditional gifts require some form of creativity. Take for instance the first and second year anniversary gifts, which are of paper and cotton. That requires some thought! Nevertheless, the first anniversary, which is a traditional gift of paper, provides a large amount of space for options. Gifts can be in the form of money, magazine subscriptions, cards, and stationary. You can personalize any of these gifts or come up with ideas of your own to choose from. Throughout the years, these traditional gives can be kept as mementos or family heirlooms.

Many of the milestones provide platforms for more expensive gifts. For instance, a tenth year anniversary’s traditional gift is China. There’s an unlimited resource of information on China available through the internet. Despite this information, be forewarned that some of the finest China can come with a hefty price tag. If you have questions about specific collectible pieces, go to an official website for price-related information. Others, of course, are less expensive–but quite often look just as good. Perhaps your spouse already has a partial set of fine China that they’ve been collecting. If so, you can always add to their collection.

Traditional wedding anniversary gifts don’t have to be boring. A traditional gift list is meant to be used as a guideline. You can use a purchase a gift made out of a specific material and put your own unique spin on it. Add a spice of your every gift you purchase on an annual basis. Whether it’s a milestone or not. Feeling playful? Wrap the gift in humorous gift-wrap. Give a humorous card. Your spouse will be tickled and thankful that you remembered your special day. Even if they know their gift will be made of, they’ll have no idea what to expect. Your spouse will be filled with anticipation each year.

2/7/06 - Will Kobe Put Up 80 Points Against Dallas This Time?

Best: Grizzlies @ Kings: Memphis was the 3rd best team in the West for a bit. But since Damon Stoudemire went down they’ve fallen to the lower seeds in the West. The Kings still have a losing record with Artest thanks to some bad road losses. A quality team like Memphis would be a good team to beat. Will they do it? We think so but only because they are at home. Predicted Score: Sacramento wins 98-94 in a close one.

Runner-up: Lakers @ Mavericks: Kobe against Dallas again. It really doesn’t matter how much the Mavs defense has improved, not when they can’t stop the Lakers. They’ve already lost the season-series to LA, but the least they can do is win here. The team is just average but Kobe is great. Double, triple-team Kobe and you win. Dallas will do this and will win. Predicted Score: Dallas wins comfortably 103-96.

Blowout: Pistons @ Hawks: Detroit has 7 losses. If they have even an iota at getting 70, they’ll have to go on a gigantic winning streak. The 95-96 Bulls had an 18-game win streak. The Pistons need something like that and a win in Atlanta should be a nice start. Predicted Score: Detroit wins 88-72 in a route.

Screen Test: How To Separate The Pros From The Cons

Filed under: Business, Management — Les Gore @ 6:57 pm

Could the brutal rape and murder of Imette St. Guillen, the 24-year old graduate student in New York City, have been prevented? Some people think so. And I’m one of them.

The prime suspect, Darryl Littlejohn, who was indicted for the murder, has a long rap sheet, including multiple drug offenses and robberies and had served time in prison. And according to the terms of his parole, wasn’t allowed to work—anywhere—after 9pm.

The alleged killer met his victim in the bar where he worked as a bouncer. In New York, as in other cities and states, it’s the law to do criminal background checks on people who work in certain kinds of jobs and businesses: like bouncers, security guards, airport workers—even Wall Street brokers. The bar owner admitted he didn’t do the required background check prior to hiring Littlejohn.

So what does this grisly big city crime have to do with your business and workplace issues? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Unless a person like this is working in your distribution center.

Separating the Pros From The Cons

Is employment screening currently part of your hiring process? Are criminal background checks part of company policy? If not, they should be. Regardless of the size of your business.

Over 82% of HR professionals report that their companies do background checks of new hires, up from 66% in 1996 according to The Society for Human Resource Management, Workplace Violence Survey.

Last year, a client experienced a serious theft problem in his warehouse. It took several months for the numbers to reveal the extent of the theft.

In retrospect, the employee who stole from his employer would have flunked background checks in three areas. He was on probation. He owed restitution for the crime he had committed. His bill paying history was bad news because of how much he had to repay. A background check of his criminal history and his credit record may have caused our client to make a different choice (they were giving him a chance). But, the extent of his problems was never revealed.

It’s all about reducing risk

Employment screening is your front line of defense. Your first and best opportunity to eliminate candidates who are dangerous, dishonest or have a history of poor work performance. Pre-employment screening is a necessary hiring practice to avoid lawsuits and costly hiring mistakes.

Wouldn’t it be nice to know that the new person you’re hiring is telling the truth? Absolutely. But don’t count on it. It’s estimated that up to 40% of resumes can contain false or tweaked information. It’s up to you and your company to make sure you’re getting in an employee everything that what was represented and promised. You’re not only responsible, you’re liable.

What is background checking?

Gone are the days of relying only on reference calls to screen new hires. With increasing security concerns, corporate scandals, and workplace violence, pre-employment screening is not only on the rise—it’s becoming standard operating policy. And at all levels. For presidents and CEOs, to the people in your creative department, to warehouse workers and call center representatives.

Pre-employment screening is often conducted by or outsourced to third party consumer reporting agencies, as defined by the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) of the Federal Trade Commission.

You not only can get information on job applicants, but background checks on your current employees, too. You’re able to get: court-by-court searches of criminal records nationwide, with up to date criminal activity, motor vehicle reports, social security traces, employment credit reports, workers’ compensation filings, employment, education, and professional license verifications, and reference interviews. Also provided are drug and alcohol testing, employment physicals and Form I-9 services (Immigration Reform and Control Act).

What does it cost?

In some cases, expect to pay a screening organization a one-time setup or administrative fee of $100 or more for your company, plus the costs of the background searches you want done. The fees are not that much and discounts are usually given for multiple screenings done within a year.

Setting up a screening program policy

The FCRA sets the standards for screening for employment. It defines a background check as a consumer report. Before you can get a consumer report for employment purposes, you must notify the job candidate in writing and get written authorization. This can be included within your company’s employment application form. If you’re simply conducting inquiries—rather than running reports—you should also get consent.

Take the time necessary to educate yourself on the process. Many small business agencies such as SCORE or the Small Business Administration (SBA) can provide counsel. Visit your state and local government’s websites on FCRA and Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA).

Become familiar with all necessary disclosure, adverse action, and other critical forms and letters you’ll need to be FCRA and state-law compliant. A third party, as part of its service, generally takes care of much of this work.

Be safe. Be smart. Don’t wait. Pre-employment background screening should now be standard practice of operating your business.

Effective Weight Loss for Today’s Busy Lifestyle

The vast majority of people have busy lives nowadays, and fine tuning our eating habits may be low on the list. We are more inclined to just grab a bite to eat at a restaurant – even fast food - while going to and from work or kid’s activities. Needless to say, this is an optimum way to pack on the pounds. A demanding job that allows little or no time for exercise just compounds the problem!

If you have a lot of weight to lose, actually doing it can be very daunting. If one pound is approximately 3,500 calories, you would have to exercise enough to burn that many calories just to lose a single point. Just thinking about that much exercise is exhausting!
Maybe the best advice is this: Take it slow. Don’t try to lose the weight all at once, especially if you have a lot of weight to lose.

Here’s what you can do instead: every week, commit to a small change in your lifestyle that takes you a little bit closer to your goal. Think of these as long-lasting changes – that’s exactly what they should be. You aren’t ‘going on’ a diet with the intention of coming off it again in a week or a month from now. You are committing to your long term health and fitness by taking easy steps towards it, a little at a time.

There are several things you can do right off the bat, to jump start your weight loss:

First, drink enough water. If you are dehydrated, it is very difficult to lose weight. Your metabolism won’t be working at full tilt if you are dehydrated. Also, if you’re thirsty, it is easy to mistake that thirst for hunger. This is why many people end up eating when they aren’t actually hungry – thirst is driving them to crave ‘wet’ foods, like yogurt (not a bad choice) or ice cream (much worse for you, obviously). The point is that if you’re not hungry, you shouldn’t be eating anything – not even vegetables or yogurt.

So how much water is enough? It is generally acknowledged that eight to ten glasses or water are enough for an adult to drink on a daily basis. Of course, if it’s particularly hot, or if you’ve been losing moisture by exercising a lot, you might want to drink more. Eight to ten glasses is a good ‘base’ amount, however.

Next, start to incorporate ‘passive exercise’ into your day as much as you can. Passive exercise, in case you’re unfamiliar with the term, refers to the exercise that you get while going about your daily routine. For example, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or getting off the bus a couple of stops early and walking to your destination, or the miles that you log in while shopping at the mall, are all excellent examples of passive exercise. It’s ‘passive’ in the sense that you don’t have to go out and do it; you just do it as a function of your daily routine. This type of exercise is great, because everyone has time for it, and we don’t need to worry about special clothing or equipment. Be sure to make time for passive exercise.

Another great thing to do is to up your consumption of fresh food – fruits and vegetables. This is a good idea for a whole variety of reasons, of course, not the least of which is the fact that these foods fight cancer. They help you lose weight in two separate ways – first, they replace other, higher calorie food in your diet, and second, they make you feel full, because they are full of fiber.

These three weight loss tips cost you nothing in terms of money or time. All it takes is a little bit of planning and some consciousness of your weight loss goals. If, after a few weeks of faithfully implementing these changes, you aren’t happy with the results, you may need to start on a more concentrated weight loss regime such as weight watchers. However, you may well find that these simple measures are enough for your weight loss needs, and all it takes is keeping them up on a regular, daily basis.

Natural Hair Conditioning and Build-Up Removal

Filed under: Beauty, Health-and-Fitness — Lisa Chambers @ 3:53 pm

Vinegar rinses can do wonders! The acidity from the vinegar helps take away built up gook stuck to the hair such as those nasty forms of silicones found in many shampoos and conditioners today, helps breaks down excess oils, and also helps remove extra glycerin from the hair that can leave hair ‘waxy’ feeling for those that use the more natural approach of soap shampoo bars. It can also actually help condition hair by gently smoothing the hair shaft making it less prone to breakage and giving it a nice shiny appearance

Either apple cider vinegar or white vinegar will do, but many seem to prefer the apple cider. Simply take a clean empty squeeze bottle or cup and dilute with water. After shampooing your hair, evenly distribute this mixture throughout your hair while rubbing it in to make sure all the hair is covered, paying special attention to the areas closer to the scalp. (Be careful not to get any in your eyes- it will sting!) You can leave this on for just a few minutes and then give your hair one more light rinse. Easy peasy! If you still use regular store bought shampoos this regimen can work wonders using vinegar rinses even once every other week, but you can do this as often as necessary. Those that use shampoo bars may use it more often- I, personally, use nothing but shampoo bars and take advantage of vinegar rinses after every wash with excellent results

As for how much to dilute the vinegar mix, I’ve seen and tried all sorts of combinations. Some say to only use a tablespoon of vinegar to about one quart of water, and I’ve seen all the way up to 1 part vinegar and 3 part water mixes recommended. I think it’s really dependant on what hair type you have and what your normal hair care regimen consists of. Your best bet is to take into consideration what length your hair is to make sure you have enough liquid to fully saturate your hair and start with a tablespoon or two of vinegar. You could experiment from there until you find what your hair likes best. Sometimes I like to be creative with it and substitute water for other liquids such as juices, teas, or milks for the added nutritional benefits that it can give to your hair. The sky is the limit- have fun with it! And yes, we know vinegar does stink! However, the smell of the vinegar fades as is dries- usually taking other bad odors with it. Sometimes adding just a few drops of essential oils to your vinegar rinse can help

Another thing you could do is infuse the vinegar with different herbs or spices such as calendula petals, chamomile, lavender buds, rosemary, parsley, rose hips, etc- many times it will help deal with the temporary smell from the vinegar and all the ones I just mentioned are even excellent for encouraging hair growth. To infuse your vinegar, just take a large clean empty jar and fill to about two inches from the top with the herbs, flowers, or spices of your choice. I tend to prefer materials that have already been dried - using fresh herbs or flowers introduces moisture into the mix and could possibly start growing some unwelcomed ickiness into your mix! Then pour your vinegar into the jar approximately to about once inch from the top of the jar- the less air you have in there also discourages mold or other bacterial growth. Considering the acidity of the vinegar this is all highly unlikely, but it’s always better to take the safer route! Store your jar in a dark place, preferably a warm spot, for about 4 to 8 weeks. Try to shake up the jar once a day, or at least as often as you can remember. When her time is up you can use anything from a strainer to cheesecloth to strain the herbs or other materials out of your infused vinegar and voilà- it’s ready for use!

The Welsh Springer Spaniel

Filed under: Pets — Michael Russell @ 2:59 pm

The Welsh Springer Spaniel is a small spaniel with instinctive hunting abilities. The Welsh is a gun dog which is referred to in Wales as a ’starter’. This is the type of hunting dog which will startle the birds, causing them to fly up for the hunter. Like most of the spaniel breeds, he is dog that is agile and quick to quarter, with a good nose and desire to work for the hunter as a partner in flushing up the birds. The Welsh Spaniel needs to be trained to the gun early to prevent ‘gun shy’ behavior. He is a hunting breed of great perseverance. Of course he possesses a good ‘nose’ and should also be of a fearless nature, enthusiastic and willing to hunt for hours. His numbers are not populous and this has helped to protect his strong hunting instincts. The ’show breeders’ of the Welsh Springer Spaniel have not placed an over emphasis on coat, or head type, which can sometimes lead to a lessening of the instinctive qualities of the dog. Nor has this dog been over bred because of extreme popularity. Thus this is a spaniel which has retained its natural abilities and can be relied on to perform the task for which he was bred.

The Welsh Springer is somewhat lighter boned and more refined in appearance than his cousin the English Springer Spaniel. The coat is a rich red and white, no other color being accepted. The correct coat will be somewhat weather resistant and naturally clean. The breed is easy to keep with few genetic conditions, although hip dysplasia may be present and there is a small incidence of dogs of this breed being susceptible to epilepsy. The ‘rage syndrome’ which has been reported in the English Springer Spaniel does not appear to be present in the Welsh Springer. He is a compact dog that should have the appearance of symmetry and balance. Tail is docked as a protection against the brush and thickets. Ears are lop and are smaller than those of the English Springer. The legs are strong and the rear quarters should have a good angle of the stifle for ground covering movement which is necessary for the function of the breed. The expression should be kindly and sweet.

The Welsh Springer makes a fine family pet. He is curious and lively, eager and playful. This is not a dog that should be left alone for hours, he needs human companionship and delights in long walks and playtimes with his family. He is easy to train, generally accepting of strangers and not overly noisy or threatening to other dogs in the household. This is a dog which endears himself to his owners after he is grown, but can be boisterous as a puppy and needs to be kept confined to a pen when he cannot be supervised. He is easy to train however and is usually very anxious to please and eager to learn. Once trained he is steadfast and steady both in the field and in the home.

Sales Process - What Can You Automate

Filed under: Business, Sales-Management — Halstatt Pires @ 2:00 pm

In the current complex and competitive market, managing the sales process is an important factor for most businesses. By automating a company’s sales process and efforts, one can increase its productivity.

Sales Force Automation, or SFA, is a technique used in marketing and business that automates the business tasks of sales. Sales tasks that can be automated might include contact management, order taking and fulfillment, information sharing, inventory monitoring, sales forecast analysis, and employees’ performance evaluations. Using SFA improves the efficiency and effectiveness of a sales team by streamlining and speeding up processes and eliminating errors. Through this technology, a sales force can have access to the latest information regarding customers’ accounts and pricing.

SFA is almost like Customer Relationship Management (CRM) which covers a vast array of topics, including areas of sales effectiveness, customer service, and marketing management. Certainly in business, each second is valuable and you can’t waste it searching for information. You can save time and money as Sales Force Automation provides optimized communication services. You also get complete management capabilities for applications and users. SFA helps you in improving customer satisfaction and it also increases sales force productivity.

Currently there are a number of SFA software solutions on the market. These software solutions help sales people take better care of their customers. They change routine aspects of sales and marketing functions such as lead assignment, contact follow-up, and opportunity reporting. Good SFA electronically manages all sales activities within a company. It is a methodology that enables sales personnel to concentrate on selling by providing tools to obtain very efficient information exchange in the sales cycle. Earlier sales force automation software installations were designed for the desktop or laptop and were not easily accessible by hand held devices. With the advancement in web based SFA technology, sales representatives can use Pocket PCs to record orders on the spot. These order details can be sent back to the system in real time over a network such as GPRS.

SFA can help sales people to manage customer interaction throughout the sales cycle, from primary contact through post-sale service. SFA applications serve two different users within a company, sales managers and sales representatives, who have changeable requirements. Sale force automation is essential in those industries where the direct field sales force tends to be high and account management is important. Pharmaceutical companies and manufacturing industries have obtained significant returns on sales force automation investments.

Before opting for any SFA software, research your options. A good sales force automation solution should have features such as multiple sales processing options and the ability to use multiple information sources. It should help in providing automation of customer assignments and field accessed decision support.

A sales force automation solution that is web enabled is at a huge advantage to those that are not. Web capability allows access to information and forms anywhere, anytime and also tools for accurate sales and demand forecasting. There must be strong security and flexibility to support new data and functionality without a large scale redesign of the system.

When choosing a sales force automation solution, keep in mind your clients and your sales force. Without flexibility to meet their needs precisely, you are likely to lose efficiency in the sales process. Choosing a flexible option will ensure your system will grow with your company.
