Can You be a Parent and a Friend to Your Kids at the Same Time?

Filed under: Home-and-Family, Parenting — Nicole MacKenzie @ 11:10 pm

Many parents today worry about being strict and enforcing discipline with their children out of fear of losing them as friends. However, if you really look at the parent/child relationship it’s actually quite different from that of a friend. With none of my friends did I ever share the deep and intimate connection that I share with my kids. If I were ever asked if I wanted to be my child’s friend instead, I would quickly say ‘No way!’ I consider that as quite a step down from the connection we presently have as parent and child.

Many adults have personally experienced growing up and growing away from a constant power struggle with their own parents. No matter what you did as a child it was never quite good enough, never right. As a result, it is not always a pleasure to hang out with your own parents. With this in mind, now that we are parents, we want to do things differently — we want to maintain a life-long friendship and rewarding connection with our kids. But exactly how do we do that?

First, let’s consider a more interesting way of asking that familiar ‘parent or friend’ question. Ask instead, ‘How can you keep the deep connection with your child while going through the childhood years and at the same time hold your child accountable to the rules?’ I have discovered, through many years of research and experience, that by building awareness and curiosity while focusing on discipline without punishment, that parents now have the opportunity to break the old parenting patterns and build the type of parent/child relationship we really want.

As an example, let’s look at something that often gets in-between the strong connection we all had with our parents when we were small children… power-struggles! Two emotionally engaged parties colliding — both parties judging each other and making each other wrong. Out of that struggle, dishonesty, manipulation, and distrust arises and deepens. This eventually makes it very uncomfortable to be around the people you once loved and respected more than anyone.

The easiest way I have found to avoid power struggles is to quit thinking of yourself as your child’s ‘boss’ and establish yourself as their ‘coach’ instead. Just this change in attitude alone can make a HUGE difference! Think of it like a sports team or a board game. All the players on the team (your children) know the rules and the consequences for breaking each rule. In a game the consequence may be losing a turn or paying a fine. On your family team the consequence may be a time-out and a cleaning assignment. But in either case, breaking a rule is not a power-struggle anymore. No one is bad or wrong and the emotional charge is removed from the situation.

When you are the coach of the family team, you are in charge and you decide what you need in order to have fun. You make the rules and you hold your child accountable to your rules. The kids can even create their own consequences (subject to your approval of course). This greatly lessens the chance of having a consequence turn into a power struggle or punishment since it was clearly understood and agreed upon in advance.

You do not have to be perfect. In fact, it is much better if you are not perfect (or pretend to be perfect!) as long as mistakes are looked at openly and honestly — for both parents and children alike — without judgment and criticism. Your child’s trust will deepen when they can reliably count on such honesty and accountability all around.

My own experience so far is very positive. In the 16 years that I have worked with parents in this method I can see with them and with my own family, that the respect and connection between the parents and children has not just remained intact, it has deepened as their children have grown older. Even the notoriously difficult teenage years become much much easier. When the connection is one of honesty and respect without judgment, teenagers will continue to rely on their parents for guidance.

Bottom line, by using MacKenzie Responsive Parenting, it’s not only a lot more fun for you to be a parent to your child than to be a friend, it’s a lot more valuable as well. Your kids will have many friends who may come and go throughout their life, but they will only have one chance to have a deep parental bond and from that learn how to become effective parents themselves.

Anti-Aging - Part 8-The Sun is for the Birds

Even routine can have a role with the anti-aging agenda. Most bird life and many non related God made animals experience a daily or weekly change to daily rising and bedtime. There exists a routine within the varying changes to sunrise and sunset that provides a special time for thanksgiving, food gathering, consumption, communication and praise. This timely variation may increase the length of daylight by up to 3 hours in some areas between the summer and winter seasons.

As the higher being man’s schedule has often been criticized as being too regulated, regimental and contradictory to his superior status.

What has often been forgotten is that the Father has promised that He will provide the essentials of food, clothing and shelter. For perfect fulfillment this will require a level of faith, trust and expectation from the recipient which will come through a job, an assigned task or specific calling. Neither the food nor the new black coat will fall out of the sky.

Man has an important part to play which requires complete belief, trust and faith in the Promise. The job is essential as the vehicle or tool to be used for basic provision. The importance of this requires daily attendance, specific arrival time and healthy strength of spirit mind and body to complete the daily requirements. For this He would recommend a daily rising at a specific non changing time provided by the regulated ringing of the alarm clock.

Different Types of Credit Card

Filed under: Credit, Finance — Peter Kenny @ 9:50 pm

The UK credit card industry has matured into one of the most lucrative and sophisticated in the world. There are now so many providers and options for customers to choose from that there should be something on the market for pretty much everyone. No matter what your personal circumstances or financial situation, you will most likely be able to find the perfect credit card that fits your conditions.

Here is a brief explanation of some of the most popular or important types of credit card available on the UK market.

First of all there are the 0% credit cards. These have sky rocketed in the last number of years. They aim to entice customers with offers of 0% on either balance transfers or purchases or both. Most lenders will be able to provide you with a 0% credit card if you seek one, and meet the qualifying criteria.

Balance transfer cards specialise in giving you a very low, or perhaps zero rate, on balance transfers for somewhere between five and nine months usually. This means that if you were currently paying a lot in interest to your credit card provider, then the balance transfer card would allow you to switch to them and have a period of time in which no interest at all is due.

Cards for those with bad credit also exist. If you have any kind of negative credit history you will probably be aware of the difficulty involved in getting a credit card. Luckily however there are credit card providers that take a flexible approach to credit assessment and may still be willing to lend to you. You will be charged a higher rate of interest for using one of these credit cards but they do provide a useful means of getting your credit back on track. By meeting your payments on time and in full you can begin the path to improving and repairing your credit history. However, use the card wisely and do not allow it to compound your existing debt problems.

Cash back credit cards are very popular, particularly with those who do not have a difficulty in repaying their credit card in full each month. If you do repay the entire balance on your bill as soon as it arrives, then you will not need a low interest rate, as you do not pay any interest. Therefore signing up to a card that rewards you with cash or some other reward will make sense.

Payday Loans Of $1000 Based On Provable Income

Filed under: Finance, Loans — Rafael Gutierrez Jr @ 8:25 pm

Some payday loans companies allow their customers to borrow around $1000 if they pay it back according to their payment schedule. Payday loan customers need to know, however, that they will end up repaying the cash advance company a lot more than they borrowed because of the high interest that is added to the payday loan.

A few of the payday loan companies do not loan out large amounts of money like this, however, and they stay with loans up to around $500. However, there are times that payday loan customers may need a larger amount so don’t depend upon a certain payday loan company to loan you as much money as you need. You could end up being disappointed.

Many people see a payday loans as their last resort because they have no other options for getting a loan. Many people say that payday loans should only be used if you are borrowing a small amount of money that the normal loan channels will not help you with. Many of the loan companies cannot loan less than $1000, but payday loan companies may see your $1000 loan as a large loan and add on a large interest rate as well.

If you can find a loan company that will loan you $1000 then that is the best decision. This is because the loan company will most likely charge you a much lower interest rate than the payday loan company will, which will make the terms of your loan easier to meet.

A Fitness Professional’s Guide To Improved Search Engine Ranking

8 Easy Steps To An Improved Search Engine Ranking For Your Fitness Website

Looking for a way to get an improved search engine ranking for your fitness web site? Want to bring in more traffic so you can sell more of your fitness services and products?…

If you’ve spent any amount of time investigating the search engines and listening to what the search engine optimization ‘experts’ have to say on the topic, I’m sure you’re a little (or a lot) confused about what you really need to do.

As with most other things in life, the so-called ‘experts’ tend to make getting an improved search engine ranking SO much more complicated than it really is.

If you’re struggling to drive traffic to your fitness website, here are 8 simple steps you can follow that are guaranteed to wake you up from your search engine nightmare…

1: It All Starts With Picking The Right Keywords

If you want an improved search engine ranking, the first thing you need to do is brainstorm a list of high profitability keywords that are related to your fitness business and that fit with your fitness web site design.

Start by making a list of the obvious keywords first. If you offer online personal training on your site, add ‘online personal training’ to your list. If you offer information on weight loss, include that too.

Don’t get too hung up on the exact keywords yet. For now, just list every possible topic you can think of that’s related to your fitness business and what you offer (or could offer) on your fitness website.

Exhausted all the obvious keywords?…

Visit the link at the end of this article for some free search engine positioning tools that will help you find additional keywords.

2: Develop A Blue-Print For Your Online Success

One of the most important things you can do to ensure your success at improved search engine ranking is to develop a solid plan of action.

Your Master Keyword List is that plan.

Once you’ve made your list of keywords and researched them using the search engine positioning tool mentioned above, it’s time to turn that list into your blue-print for online success.

Your Master Keyword List will help you decide which keywords you’ll design your fitness web site around and it’ll also make it much easier to decide exactly how to structure your fitness website for the best results.

3: Focus On Your Highest Profitability Keywords For Improved Search Engine Ranking

Now that you’ve made a list of keywords and built a fully researched Master Keyword List, it’s time to get improved search engine ranking by selecting your highest profitability topics.

Take a quick look at the Supply and Demand information (the info you gathered using the search engine positioning tool listed at the end of this article) contained in your Master Keyword List.

Try to find keywords that are related to what your site is about (and the products/services you offer) and that also have a HIGH demand and a LOW supply.

Select the 5-10 keywords that have the best demand-to-supply ratio. These will be the first pages you build for your fitness website.

Since they have a high demand (i.e. are searched for frequently) and a low supply (few competing web pages for that word) they’ll give you the best change if getting a high ranking at the search engines.

4: Build Your Web Pages So They Focus On One Specific Keyword

Many fitness professionals make a common mistake when they design their websites. They try to focus a single web page on as many related keywords as possible in hopes of getting an improved search engine ranking for multiple words.

Instead, focus each page of your fitness website on a single keyword from your Master Keyword List. This tells the search engines EXACTLY what your page is about and improves your chances of ranking highly at the search engines.

5: Keep Finding New High-Profitability Topics To Add To Your Master Keyword List

Once you’ve decided on (and built pages about) the highest profitability keywords related to your fitness website and the services you offer, start building pages that focus on the remaining keywords in your Master Keyword List.

Once you run out of keywords on your Master Keyword List, repeat the steps outlined above to develop even more high profitability keywords related to the services you offer on your fitness website.

6: Manually Submit To All The Major Search Engines

Once you’ve build those first 5-10 high profitability pages and linked to them from your fitness site’s home page, it’s time to let the search engines know about them.

First, do NOT use one of those automated submitting services or submitting software. The search engines hate those things and at best, you’ll be penalized for using them. At worst - you won’t be included in their index at all.

To have the best chance at improved search engine ranking you should manually submit to the major search engines. Each has their own set of rules for doing this and you should read those rules before you submit your site.

7: List With The Important Directories

Search engines are automated computer programs that scan, index, and determine your relevancy ranking thru a complex math equation. Directories, on the other hand, are completely run by humans.

Listing with the major directories will get you a much better search engine placement because the search engines give your site extra ‘weight’ if a major directory links to your fitness website.

Once you’ve listed with the big ones (like DMOZ and Yahoo!) be sure to check out the secondary directories for an even more improved search engine ranking.

8: Don’t Waste Your Time On Developing Link Exchanges

There’s a lot of talk nowadays about building link popularity and exchanging links with other sites to get improved search engine ranking for your fitness website.

The general understanding (or is that MISunderstanding?) is that having other sites link to your fitness site will tell the search engines ‘Hey, I’m important… Rank me high!’.

On the surface that seems logical. But the truth is, it’s not so much the number of sites linking to you that matters — it’s the QUALITY of those sites that will boost your rankings with the search engines.

You’ll do much better by focusing on developing a huge Master Keyword list and building your pages as described above. And by all means, do make an attempt at building link popularity by getting listed in the major directories and sub-directories.

Just avoid trading links with every fitness website you run across. More often than not it will actually hurt you rather than help.

Does getting an improved search engine ranking sound like a lot of work?…

It is. But the time you invest here will pay off in spades!

Here’s the link for the search engine tools mentioned above…

How Well Do You Know Your SELF? - An Exploration of What’s Inside

Filed under: Self-Improvement, Spirituality — Brian Walsh @ 6:23 pm

Many categories of self have common characteristics, and there is value in exploring them. By understanding their distinctiveness, we may gain a clearer picture of how each of us fits into the world.

Self-Esteem
Also known as self-worth, a person’s self-esteem is forged during the first seven or eight years of life. By then the mind has created the critical faculty (also known as the critical factor) to filter incoming messages, thus protecting the impressionable and immature subconscious. Until that is in place, absolutely everything a child hears, sees, and experiences will fashion a core belief that could be a lifetime guide.

If, during this critical period, a child consistently hears, ‘You are so disorganized, you’ll never amount to anything,’ or similar judgmental put-downs, there is a strong possibility that the person will experience self-sabotage in later life. In transactional analysis, the core belief is known as the parent and it relentlessly directs behavior. Low self-esteem is created in an atmosphere of conditional love, and subsequently reinforced through negative self-talk. Unfortunately, contrary evidence is usually disregarded.

Some people endeavor to bolster their self-esteem through external elements, like marriage, alliance with others, and even the accumulation of money, titles, and degrees. While surrounding oneself with positive people has its benefits, it is problematic to define the self through external trappings.

Although it is a good thing to be proud of accomplishments, it is essential for people to make a clear distinction between their identities and their accomplishments.

All other ’selves’ emanate from self-esteem, that is, they take cues from the quality of the self-esteem. A fragile self-esteem will spawn weakness. A sound self-esteem, built in an environment of unconditional love, will sponsor resilient self-identities.

Self-awareness is the ability to reflect on our thought processes. We can become aware of many signals received from our bodies. We are not our feelings, thoughts, behaviors, and moods. These are simply processes that we experience and are not a ‘part’ of our essence. We are able to objectively scrutinize the way we see ourselves. This social mirror of our place within humankind allows us to evaluate the roles of nature and nurture in our own attitudes and behaviors.

Self-acceptance is the coming to terms with who we are right now, just as we are – with all our faults, weaknesses, and errors, as well as our assets and strengths. It is important to appreciate that the negatives belong to us – they are not us. Recognition of shortcomings is a healthy first step in personal growth. The actual self is necessarily imperfect and dynamically striving for improvement. It is always a work-in-progress. Blatantly professing to be perfect produces great mental strain.

Self-honesty is being in touch with one’s own basic human instincts for justice and fairness for self and others. It means being aware of rationalizations used to counter our conscience and other internal signals. It means ridding oneself of the need to appraise self-worth in external terms. It also means assessing one’s strengths and weaknesses realistically.

Self-image is a custom-built collage fabricated from how we think others see us. We tend to draw conclusions about ourselves based on how we are treated. Psychologists generally agree that people underrate themselves. An inner sense of mastery and competence is developed only when we focus on our inner core of personal vitality and creativity rather than on seemingly negative evidence.

Negative feedback can be constructive in helping us get back on course; however, when we obsess about what others think, we relentlessly and consciously monitor every act, word, and manner. This creates inhibited, self-conscious perfectionists.

Traditionally, when employees demonstrated loyalty and hard work, they had an expectation of job security, regular pay increases, and promotions. Now, in many work locations, uncertainty and stress prevail. Habitual feelings of injustice lead to the victim mode of resentment and self-pity, thus lowering self-image and self-esteem.

Self-mastery is the knowledge about how to manage oneself on a daily basis so as to maximize accomplishment. Remember the old saying, “By failing to plan, people plan to fail.” Setting goals that are specific, timely, achievable, measurable, accountable, and realistic, and which demand just a slight stretch, have the likelihood of being reached, if combined with passion and action.

One constant in life is change. How we manage change depends on our experience and mind-set. An unpleasant encounter may subconsciously program us to either shy away from, or preferably, relish a new challenge. It all depends on how we perceive the original event. Some of my clients are “stuck” in their jobs, their relationships, or their lives in general. By remaining in their comfort zone, they are denying themselves opportunities to live at their full capacity. Self-mastery is knowing when to learn new skills or take on new responsibilities, when to hold on to beliefs that serve you, and when to let go of beliefs that do not serve you.

Self-efficacy is the context-specific assessment of belief in our personal capabilities to organize and execute what is required so as to achieve the intended goal. It is concerned not with the skills we have, but rather with our control over our own level of functioning. People with high self-efficacy choose more demanding tasks. They set higher goals, put in more effort, and persist longer than those who are low in self-efficacy.

Self-efficacy grows through personal and vicarious experience, discipline, and valid feedback. Although usually considered in a single context, there may also be a generalized effect reflecting a person’s abilities across a broad array of difficult or novel situations. For instance, if someone is loved by a supportive family on the home front, then that person will display a greater confidence on the job. This will be reflected by peer and management feedback, which will, in turn, show up on the home front, perpetuating the cycle.

Self-confidence is an external manifestation of the health of self-esteem, self-efficacy, and self-mastery. Although it reflects the strength of these selves, it can be purposefully overridden to become a façade that we deliberately create for external scrutiny. I had a client who was a television actor. He once told me that actors often don’t know where their next job is coming from. They may seem to possess a great deal of self-confidence, but often it hides a shaky self-esteem.

If it is merely bravado, it is shallow. On the other hand, the technique of ‘act-as-if’ can have a positive effect on the subconscious, since it cannot differentiate between something real and something vividly imagined.

Self-love is the regard you have for your own happiness. It parallels unconditional love inasmuch as, no matter what you do, you nurture yourself by giving yourself permission to take pleasure in whatever life has to offer. In the therapy of Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), we use the phrase, ‘I deeply and completely love and accept myself.’

Self-actualization is the realization of one’s full potential through creativity, independence, spontaneity, and a grasp and appreciation of this world.

There were three brick-layers at work.
Each of them was asked in turn – ‘What are you doing?’
The first brick-layer answered, ‘I’m laying bricks.’
The second answered, ‘My job… to support my family.’
And the third bricklayer smiled and said, ‘Me? Why, I’m building the world’s most magnificent cathedral.’

Is It Un-Cool to be Smart in School

It appears that in high school these days it is somewhat uncool to smart. This is quite problematic because it affects the future of America and it is for this reason that an online think tank recently addressed this issue as it discussed the need for more mentoring among teenagers. One online think tank member stated;

“One factor is the popular theme in middle and high schools that it’s somehow uncool to be smart - when the reverse is actually true.”

This is a real problem. It has a lot to do with social conditioning and roll models. For instance look at Paris Hilton and her TV demeanor. Kids are watching this aren’t they; it is a real problem. Yet if you really look closely, the marketing is brilliant and anything but stupid. It is too bad that we do not teach kids and show them that being smarter and achieving more in academics will increase the chances for success in later life. It is almost as if we need to show them a before and after picture of the screw off now and what they look like later in life.

You see if we do not help our children see the value in hitting the books early on, it will be much more difficult to get them to understand why they need to go to college and what they must do to achieve more. If they take it as all fun and games and do not get me wrong that is a nice age to be without a lot of responsibility, however they need to take their future more seriously. Mentoring maybe the key here. Perhaps you will think on it for me and consider this in 2006.

How To Play 5 Card Stud Poker

Five Card Stud is similar to Five Card Draw, the difference being that you do not ever get a chance to replace cards in your hand and therefore do not get a chance to improve that hand. As in Seven Card Stud you get a hole card and 4 open cards for all to see. Most versions play the final card as a community card. Since there is no chance to improve your hand, the winning hands tend to be either pairs or high cards and it is hard to string people along to the final street. Some variations on Five Card Stud alleviate this by making the last card a pocket card allowing for some raises.

The Open

The hand starts with the dealer handing each player 2 cards. First cards dealt are a hole card and then the dealer follows up with an open card for each player. Wagering then begins, usually with the high open card going first and then following clockwise. This continues until betting is over. These are the first two “Streets”.

Third Street

The dealer then hands out a third card, which is another open card. This is followed by another round of betting. Betting begins again with the highest open card opening and continues until there are no more bets made. Then it is time for the Fourth Street.

Fourth Street

Again the dealer hands out an open card, which is then followed by another round of betting. Betting again continues until all call and then it is on to the Fifth Street.

Fifth Street

The Fifth Street is the final card. Usually this is an open card but some variations play this as a hole or pocket card to make the game more interesting. This variation creates more uncertainty about which cards your opponent’s hole cards could be and allows for more interesting betting opportunities. Bluffs and more creative betting make this variation more interesting than four straight open cards.

Another variation is to have both the first and second cards remain hole cards, for much the same reasons as making the fifth card a hole card. The problem with having only the first card as a hole card is that even beginning players get a feel for the odds of any particular player having a better hand than theirs, based on their open cards. Therefore it is difficult to have an interesting hand of cards as betting tends to be rather a bit more conservative as a result.
