10 Really Low-Cost Ways to Start Your Stamp Collection

Stamp collecting doesn’t have to be an expensive hobby. You can enjoy collecting stamps with limited financial resources. Here are 10 really low-cost ways to start stamp collecting.

1. Ask your friends to use commemorative stamps on their mail when they write to you. Commemorative stamps are generally larger than regular stamps and are issued to honor famous people, places, or events. Because commemorative stamps are usually issued in lesser quantities than common smaller stamps, they are of much more interest to collectors. Tell your friends that you are a stamp collector and ask them to request commemorative stamps at the post office.

2. When you send away for offers that require postage or self-addressed, stamped envelopes, use commemorative stamps. You’ll get them back when the envelopes are returned to you.

3. Ask your neighbors, friends, and relatives to save their used stamps for you. You’ll find that most people will be happy to save their stamps for you when they learn that you are a collector.

4. If you know someone who gets letters from other countries, ask them to save those stamps. Always be on the lookout for potentially good stamp contacts, and don’t be afraid to ask them to go through their mail for you before they throw away all the envelopes.

5. Ask friends and family to save the envelopes from their office mail for you. Many businesses get a lot of foreign mail and regularly throw away stamps that have interest and value to a collector.

6. Ask your parents if they have any old letters with stamps on the envelopes. Don’t peel the stamp off the envelope. This will cause thin spots or tears, both of which ruin a stamp’s appearance and lessen its value to collectors. Always tear off the envelope corner so that there is paper all around the stamp, and make sure that all of the perforations are undamaged.

7. If you know other stamp collectors, ask them if they have duplicates that they are willing to give or sell to you. Many collectors have thousands of duplicates and they are often willing to help get new philatelists get started by giving them stamps or by selling them packets of stamps much more cheaply than can be purchased in stores or by mail.

8. Look for free stamps advertised by stamp companies. Free stamps are often offered along with “approvals,” an assortment of other stamps that you must either buy or return. This can be a convenient way to buy stamps. Note, however, that you usually have to pay the return postage if you return the approval stamps.

9. Check out stamp clubs in your area. Clubs may offer stamps as prizes, or have inexpensive stamps you can afford to buy. Some stamp clubs sponsor junior clubs the local community center, YMCA, or schools.

10. Consider starting a stamp club if one doesn’t already exist in your area. It only takes four or five other stamp collectors who are interested in getting together to learn about and trade stamps and ideas.

With free stamps and a few inexpensive accessories, such as a small album and a package of stamp hinges, even collectors with little money can have a great time.

So, what are you waiting for? Start collecting stamps today!

Filed under: Business, Management — Dr. LM Foong @ 10:49 pm

In my previous article entitled: Market and Customer focus - Baldrige Assessment Case Studies for Category 3, I shared about common assessment findings of several companies being assessed by a group of trained and experienced assessors. In this article, I will provide similar findings but on Information and Analysis, of the Baldrige Criteria. It is provided in the form of case studies which include Criteria summary as described in year 2001 Baldrige Criteria, assessment findings in terms of Strengths and Area for Improvements.

There are seven categories in the Baldrige Criteria. In this article, I will deal with the bold categories listed below:-

  3. Key information and data are made available to all departmental heads as well as at strategic location to enable decision making

Common Area for Improvement

  1. Benchmark data is lacking for most company and departmental level for comparison of performance. Target set for each KPI are available but is unable to keep up the pace of improvement needed

How Herbs are Used

Filed under: Alternative, Health-and-Fitness — Charles Browne @ 9:24 pm

Herbs can be a gentle, natural approach to wellness. But how does a person use them? This article explains the various ways that herbs are prepared and used.

TEA: 1 tsp. of herb is used for 1 cup of water. Used internally or externally. Infusion: (For herb leaves or flowers). Water is heated to boiling, removed from heat, & poured over herb. Is set until cool enough to drink. Cold Water Infusion: Herbs are covered with cold water and steeped overnight. Slightly heated before using. Decoction: (For herb root, bark, or seed). Water is heated to boiling, herbs added, boiled for 3 minutes-1hour (the longer it’s boiled, the stronger it will be), or until half the liquid has evaporated. Removed from heat and let set until cool enough to drink.

MEDICINAL TEA: ½ oz. herb used per cup of water. Taken 3 times daily.

VINEGAR: Herbs placed in a jar and covered with apple cider vinegar. Shaken once a day for three weeks. Used herbs removed and liquid saved. Vinegars are stronger than teas. 1 tbs. taken daily or as needed. Used internally or externally.

EXTRACT or TINCTURE: Similar to a vinegar, except that alcohol (brandy, vodka, wine, etc.) is used in place of vinegar. 1 tbs. taken once or twice daily.

COMPRESS or FOMENTATION: A compress is a cloth soaked in a warm herbal tea or extract, and applied externally. When cloth cools, area cooled with cold water and fresh compress applied.

POULTICE: A poultice is simply taking the used herb from a tea, and applying it directly to skin. Reapplied when dry.

PLASTER: Herbs moistened, wrapped in a clean cloth, and applied externally.

OINTMENT: An herbal tea, extract, or vinegar mixed with a salve and applied externally.

OIL: Herbs are placed in a jar, covered with olive oil, and placed in a warm spot for 2-3 weeks. Oils are for external use only, and should never be taken internally.

BATH: Medicinal tea added to bathwater (anything can be absorbed through the skin).

SYRUP: Herbs boiled in water (½ oz. for each cup water) for ½-1 hour, cooled, equal amount of honey added, & refrigerated.

WARNING: A person can be allergic to just about anything, so it is generally recommended to begin with a small dose and to watch for reactions. Prolonged or excessive use of any herb raises the risk of being harmful to your health. What works for one person may not help, and may even be harmful to, another person. Never give herbs to a child unless you, and your child’s doctor, first become knowledgeable & certain of its safety.

Summer Boredom Busters

Filed under: Home-and-Family, Parenting — Renee Kirchner @ 8:49 pm

Summer has just started, but all across the country mothers are already hearing the dreaded phrase, ‘I’m bored! There’s nothing to do.’ Don’t panic. You can help your kids entertain themselves with a little creativity. I have compiled a list of ten summer boredom buster. Most of these activities cost little or no money and most of them do not require hours of your time. Once you get your children to think creatively, they will be able to come up with many ways to entertain themselves.

1. ARTS AND CRAFTS CENTER

Set up an arts and crafts center on your dining room table. You only use the table for Thanksgiving and Christmas anyway. You will be amazed at what your children can create with a few simple supplies. Set out construction paper, scissors, crayons, glue sticks, craft sticks, cotton balls, markers, and glitter. If you have an arts and crafts book handy, put that on the table too. One idea will act as a springboard for many more. My daughter can entertain herself all day with an arts and crafts center.

2. TAKE A LISTENING WALK

I do this activity with my students at school and they just love it. First we read ‘The Listening Walk’ by Paul Showers. The story is about a little boy who goes on a walk and hears all kinds of interesting things. Tell your children that they are going on a listening walk. They will not be able to talk during your walk. Instead they must listen to all the sounds they hear around them. When you get back from the walk see who can list the most sounds that they heard. Did everyone hear the same sounds? The results might surprise you.

3. PET SITTING

Your family could offer to pet sit for a neighbor. Take your children with you to the neighbor’s house and ask them to help you. If you are taking care of a dog, your kids could feed the dog, take him on a walk, and brush him. If you are pet sitting a cat, your kids could help change the litter box and play with the cat. This activity is great during the summer months when your family is less busy. Your neighbor will appreciate your help and your kids can learn about responsibility.

4. MAKE A MOVIE

Does your family own a camcorder? If so, you can keep your kids occupied for days by letting them make their own movie. Ask them to write a script and hand out parts to everyone in the family or to some of their friends. They will need to learn their lines and make props. Once they film their movie they could sell tickets and have a screening at your house. You can pop some popcorn for your guests to eat while they watch the show.

5. BREAK A WORLD RECORD

When I was a kid I always thought it would be great to break a world record. My goal was to be in the Guinness Book of World Records for something. Get your kids a copy of the book from the library and have them flip through it until they find a record they think they can break. Maybe they could blow the largest bubble with bubblegum or jump rope the longest. You get the idea. This could occupy your children for many hours.

6. GROW A GARDEN

Give your children a small plot of land to grow a garden this summer. For a small amount of money you could buy them flower or vegetable seeds and let them test their green thumb. They can borrow your gardening tools or you could get them a small trowel and gardening gloves. Just imagine how satisfied they will be when their flowers bloom or they can serve their vegetables at the dinner table one evening. They may develop a life long love of gardening.

7. CHILDREN’S YARD SALE

Have you ever noticed a lot of clutter in your children’s bedrooms? Do they have way too many toys that they’ve outgrown? Let them host a yard sale in your front yard. Your kids can sort through their clothes and toys and mark them for sale. Give them a few tables and chairs and maybe some clothing line to string across two trees. They can set up a lemonade stand to quench the thirst of shoppers.

8. MAKE ERRANDS MORE FUN

Every day can’t be a party. You have errands to run and household chores that need to be tended to. Make your everyday errands more fun by turning them into a game. When you go to the grocery store you can give older kids a list and see who is the first to bring back everything on their list. If you’re running errands in the car, have children play the alphabet game. Ask them to find all of the letters of the alphabet on signs before you get back to the house. The one who finds the most letters gets a prize.

9. TAKE A DAY TRIP

Once in a while you need to get out of the house. Take a day trip with your kids. If you live in the suburbs, go to the city. You could visit a science museum and have a picnic at a city park. An outing to the city zoo would be popular with older and younger kids. If you’re feeling really adventurous you could travel to a small town that you’ve never visited. Find a local town that has an interesting draw like a lake, a wildlife preserve, an aviation museum or something that your kids would be interested in.

10. CAMPING IN THE BACKYARD

You don’t have to travel far to get back to nature. It can be found as close as your back door. Plan a camping trip in your backyard one evening. Start with a cookout on the grill complete with roasted marshmallows. You and your family can sing campfire songs, tell stories, and look at the stars. If your family is not the camping type, you could probably borrow a tent from a neighbor who camps. Roll out the sleeping bags and spend an evening under the stars. Kids love anything out of the ordinary and this definitely qualifies as out of the ordinary.

Measuring TQM Success - Baldrige Assessment Case Study for Category 3 Market and Customer Focus

Filed under: Business, Marketing — Dr. LM Foong @ 7:25 pm

In my previous article entitled: Measuring TQM Success published on [June 03, 2006 08:50:17 am], I wrote about Baldrige Values and Concepts as well as the Baldrige Assessment Approach. In this issue, I will provide an insight on common assessment findings in Baldrige Criteria Category 3 – Market and Customer Focus from several companies being assessed by a group of trained and experienced assessors. It is provided in the form of case studies which include Criteria summary as described in year 2001 Baldrige Criteria (source: http://www.nist.gov/quality), assessment findings in terms of Strengths and Area for Improvements.

There are seven categories in the Baldrige Criteria. In this article, I will deal with the bold category listed below:-

Leadership | Strategic Planning | Customer and Market Focus | Information and Analysis | Human Resource Focus | Process Management | Business Results

Criteria Summary, Category 3 - Customer and Market Focus

The Customer and Market Focus Category examine how your organization determines requirements, expectations, and preferences of customers and markets. Also examined is how your organization builds relationships with customers and determines the key factors that lead to customer acquisition, satisfaction, and retention and to business expansion.

3.1 – Market and Customer Knowledge Describe how your organization determines requirements, expectations, and preferences of customers and markets to ensure the continuing relevance of your products/services and to develop new opportunities.

3.2 – Customer Relationship and Satisfaction Describe how your organization builds relationships to acquire, satisfy, and retain customers and to develop new opportunities. Describe also how your organization determines customer satisfaction.

Common Strengths

  1. A formal customer survey is established to gather market and customer information periodically. Other form of information gathering are done during customer visits, customer enquiries and customer complaints
  2. A systematic customer complaints procedure are well established and practiced. It is subjected to internal and external ISO Quality Management audit
  3. Yearly distributor convention and recognition is held to maintain and improve customer relationship. It is also a forum for new product launch and dialog for feedback for continuous improvement

Common Area for Improvement

  1. Although customer feedback is obtained for market trend and end-user expectations, there is no process to manage these information to drive for customer satisfaction
  2. Data collected form customer complaints are not aggregated for analysis and systematic improvement
  3. Response to customer expectations are ad hoc and non systematic. There is no process to gather these information for trend analysis for product feature enhancement.

In summary, the above are only sample of common assessment findings. Normally, a full assessment report is given to company being assessed. The report would include details and scoring. It is a value-added feedback for senior leaders to use as an input to Strategic Planning. My next article will share assessment case study on Information and Analysis, Category 4.

How to Choose the Best Lighting for Your Greenhouse

Filed under: Gardening, Home-and-Family — Joan Yankowitz @ 6:42 pm

1. Type of greenhouse — Before buying greenhouse lighting, you must understand the kind of greenhouse that you have. Is it a commercial greenhouse or a personal one? Knowing what type of greenhouse that you have will determine what kind of lighting to choose. For instance, if you have a commercial greenhouse, it is best that you buy lighting that is created to endure humid, adverse conditions that are commonly found in commercial conservatories. Research your options before making any purchase.

2. Length of use — The duration of light use in greenhouses based on a “photoperiod”— the period in which the light will be used may vary. For example, you may use lighting for a “12-hour photoperiod.” This means that within 24 hours cycle, lighting will be used for 12 hours and 12 hours with no light at all. It is important to buy a light that meets your specific usage needs. Find out what your needs are before making your selections.

3. Purpose — Buy a light that will focus on your desired results. For instance, if you want to motivate the growth of your orchids, it is best to buy a light that will put more weight on the “spectrum colors” like the red, blue and the “far-red wavelengths.” The colors of the light have notable effects on the plant growth. Not all light will produce the desired results. Talk to experts before purchasing.

4. Electrical efficiency — Opt for lighting products that provide optimum effect without having to compromise the amount of energy that they consume. It’s better to buy lights that are efficient and can still conserve as little energy as possible. Ensure that the lighting you buy meets your electrical efficiency requirements.

5. Heat — Remember that lighting should only be used where it is needed. A light that emits more heat as it releases light can be very harmful. Too much heat on a plant will trigger its death. For example, it’s not a good idea to buy an incandescent bulb because it gives out too much heat. Make sure you understand how much heat each lighting option produces before purchasing.

Lighting is an important factor in a plant’s development. Carefully consider the kinds of light you use in your greenhouse in order to ensure the quality of plant growth that you want to achieve.

High Yield Investments – Simple Investments that Build Wealth Fast

Filed under: Finance, Wealth-Building — Stephen Todd @ 5:52 pm

If you want a simple high yield investment that has the potential to build wealth fast, then this article is for you. Here we outline a high yield investment opportunity that’s simple to understand, simple to invest in – and it could yield 100% annual gains.

The Background

This basis of this high yield investment is a well-known economic reality - and you can easily do it yourself, without an asset manager, or the help of a mutual fund.

Here’s the background:

. The global economy is expanding quickly.

. The new emerging economic super powers of China, and India, are hungry for raw materials.

. Geo political tensions are rising worldwide.

The fact is, the global economy is expanding - and it needs fuel.

This looks set to create a boom in commodities prices – creating a high yield investment opportunity for all.

How to Get In on the Action

For this high yield investment, lets pick out some markets, which could yield high capital growth rates.

Currencies

Commodities are on the move - so buy currencies of countries that are big commodity exporters - and here you should look at Canada, and Australia.

The Canadian dollar has quietly appreciated by 30% over the last 3 years. Investing in The Canadian dollar, with just 10: 1 leverage, would have given a return of 300%! A great high return investment - and there’s more to come:

The Australian Dollar has lagged behind - but looks set to move strongly, and it’s well placed to take advantage of the huge markets of India, China, as well as various countries all around the Pacific Rim.

CRB Index

Just as you can trade stock markets via indexes – you can also trade commodities.

The CRB is an index of a wide basket of commodities – and they’re on the move. After a recent pause, prices look set to take off again.

There’s another high yield investment that could make 100% annually - using a simple buy and hold strategy:

Platinum

We live in a world with increasing geo political tensions, and many traders are looking at gold as a hedge against volatility.

A great metal to invest in as a hedge is Platinum - already up by 30% since late last year - and it could explode to the upside.

Not only is Platinum an investment hedge against world tension - it’s also an industrial metal, with a high demand - in such areas as car production, and other hi-tech products.

Platinum is the ultimate high yield investment to hedge against stock market falls - or as a high yield investment in its own right.

The BIG One!

If you have followed the huge rises in oil recently, you may be surprised to learn that there’s another energy market set to soar in value – Natural Gas.

Why Natural Gas? - This is perhaps the best high yield investment of all in terms of potential.

The move has not yet started – The logic behind Natural Gas prices soaring, are compelling - and now could be the time to invest for the following reasons:

1. The US wants to reduce its reliance on overseas oil imports, and natural gas deposits are plentiful in the US over the longer term - but short-term demand exceeds supply.

2. Natural gas is environmentally friendly – being one of the cleanest fuels on earth.

3. Natural gas is the right fuel to meet US energy needs - and it’s produced domestically.

Over the coming years natural gas demand will grow - and supply will not keep pace with demand – The result? Huge price rises could be on the way.

A Natural Gas commodity investment could easily make 100% or more per annum – making it a good choice, for the ultimate, high yield investment opportunity.

Getting on Board

You don’t need a mutual fund, hedge fund or asset manager - you can simply buy, and hold these investments yourself. The best way to do this is with options - which offer you unlimited profit potential - and limited risk.

Your asset or fund manager normally makes money from commissions. They therefore like to turn your investment over frequently - to make commission for themselves, which will dilute your capital gains.

Your asset, or fund manager wouldn’t do this type of strategy - but you can!

There are plenty of brokers who will take your order - and help you pace them. There’s also plenty of free information on the net, which will show you how to buy, and hold, these high yield investments.

Realistic 100% Annual Gains

So, if you want a real high yield investment, with the potential for 100% annual profits, which you can understand, and trade easily - then check out the investments outlined above. Then get set for a high yield investment, which has the potential to deliver huge gains!

Adverse Commercial Mortgage Provides an Opportunity to Grow

Adverse commercial mortgage loans are taken for commercial or business purpose despite having a bad credit. Commercial mortgage loans are an excellent way of expanding your existing business or even to start a new business.

Commercial mortgage loans are almost similar to other mortgages. It is normally believed that small businesses gets high rate of interest as compared to large businesses. But, unfortunately it is not true. The interest rates for all kind of commercial mortgages are same. The rates of adverse commercial mortgage loans may be fixed or variable.

However, adverse commercial mortgage loan companies will take several things into consideration while processing the loan. Mortgage lenders will consider credit history of the company, income resources, present value of the property, resale value etc. By examining all these factors, the mortgage lender will be in position to offer you reasonable commercial mortgage rates.

Unlike past, adverse commercial mortgage makes it possible for people of low credit score to apply for a mortgage loan and get it approved. While applying for mortgage loans, no pre-qualification process is required. On the contrary, adverse commercial mortgage offers an opportunity to the borrowers to earn good credit scores for themselves.

Bad credit record is characterised by high interest rates. Borrowers with bad credit history are often perceived as risk by the lenders. That is the reason high interest rates are charged from them. There are several lenders who offer adverse credit mortgage loans. Make sure you learn everything about adverse credit mortgage before striking a perfect mortgage deal.

The Intel Core Duo allows the MacBook Pro the ability to use the power of two processors on one chip. What this means is that the performance of the machine is doubled, while it only needs to power one processor. The front side bus at 667Hz, which Apple says ‘runs faster than any pervious Mac notebook,’ allows for graphics to be switched between 2D and 3D.

iSight

There is a built in iSight camera, so that you may video conference around the world use the iChat software.

The Mac Book Pro was a great machine. I’ve been using it for a while now and I absolutely love it. I doubt I’ll be going back to a Windows based machine anytime soon!

Affordable UK Life Insurance

Filed under: Insurance, Life-Annuities — Ken Barnes @ 2:48 pm

Are you in need of affordable UK life insurance? If you’re a woman, you might think the answer to this question is no. After all, life insurance has always been something that men mostly worried about.

As the primary breadwinner, it has traditionally been a man’s responsibility to ensure his income would be replaced upon his death. It’s always been the “right” thing to do. But times have changed and nowadays it’s just as important for women to seek affordable UK life insurance as it is for men.

In these days of dual-income wage earners, stay-at-home dads, children caring for their aging parents, divorce, and all sorts of other creative living arrangements, women need to realize that their deaths cause more than emotional heartbreak.

When a woman dies, her death can have a significant financial impact on a family, whether or not she earns an income. Now that women living in the UK have such easy access to affordable life insurance, getting a policy is a smart move.

Consider this

When a woman does bring home a salary, her paycheck will cease upon her death. That loss of income will definitely cause the surviving family members to make adjustments to their way of living. If a woman does not bring home a salary, her loss can be just as financially devastating.

It may be necessary for the family to incur significant expenses if they have to hire service providers to handle all the work the mother did to support her growing family.

Even when children are not involved, many women today care for their aging parents. When a woman names her parents as her beneficiaries, they’ll get the face value of her life insurance policy upon her death.

The parents can then use that payout to cover the costs of an assisted living facility, to cover their medical bills, or even to modify their homes to make them more accessible.

In the event of a divorce, a woman might find that she is no longer listed as the beneficiary on her ex-husband’s life insurance policy; just one more example of why today’s women are seeking their own affordable UK life insurance coverage.

Where to look

If you’re a woman and you are employed, the first place to look for affordable life insurance is your UK employer. Companies that employ a large number of workers often offer group life insurance policies to their employees.

In many instances, there is no cost to participate in a group plan. But even when there are costs involved, they generally are nominal.

If you are not employed, or if your employer does not offer a group plan, don’t worry. You can find many reputable companies offering affordable UK life insurance by searching on the internet. You can also open the telephone directory and locate numerous sources.

It doesn’t really matter how you do it. What matters most is that you realize the importance of locating affordable life insurance whether you’re a woman living in the UK or elsewhere.
