Free Doughnuts

Filed under: Arts-and-Entertainment, Humor — Ilia Boyko @ 11:34 pm

One night after spending hours in our local club and consuming large amounts of alcohol me and a few of my friends were on the way to a well know fast food chain outlet to get some food. At the doors we were stopped by a homeless guy asking us to donate him some money in order for him to get some food. Being nicely happy we decided to get him some ourselves.

After spending, what seemed like hours in the queue we slowly walked back to the door only to discover that one of my burger buns was not there. Obviously I have decided to go back and complain. Surprisingly a nice lady at the counter did not even ask any questions. She was very apologetic and on top of that I got given 6 chocolate doughnuts as compensation.

On the way out I have discovered a bun lying on the floor next to the door. It turned out that when I was carrying my food I have managed to lose the top bit of my burger. So it was not kitchen staff’s fault at the end. Nevertheless we walked out to get some fresh air and eat our food.

Outside there was the same homeless guy asking more people to sponsor his meal. He was probably even less sober than us because he came up to me for the second time with the same food request. Since I now had extra doughnuts I decided to give him the whole lot of 6 as well as the chips we got him. It does feel good helping someone less fortunate than you.

The homeless guy took the food, had a little sniff and binned the whole lot straight away. While me and my friends were standing there stunned by his audacious behaviour he turned around and went off to ask more people for money. I guess he was not hungry after all…

Latest and Most Advanced Technology Applied to Health Care

I would like to speak tonight about a new application of existing technology that could very soon have an almost unbelievable impact on your life.

Most health books are referred to as ‘How To’ type of books because they are basically designed to help you help yourself. This book is different; it’s about a major change in the health care system, a change that would provide breakthroughs in human health and life style, far beyond anything we have ever seen.

The current health care system is outstanding in many respects, in fact it’s known world wide for its expertise in trauma care, surgery capabilities, and many other forms of emergency care along with the numerous other areas of expertise. It’s something that is very valuable to all of us, and will no doubt continue to be a very important part of our life. Unfortunately, however, as outstanding as the health care system is in these critical areas, it also has a major weakness that causes an enormous amount of unnecessary physical suffering and medical expense. That weakness is the failure of the medical system to prevent the continuing existence of very high levels of chronic disease. The changes in the medical system being proposed here tonight would dramatically change that.

Over a 100 million people in this country are suffering with chronic disease–that is more than one out of every three of us. Furthermore, many of these diseases are of a very serious nature, including the major terminal and crippling diseases that we are all too familiar with and too often a witness to within our own family, circle of friends and neighbors.

Millions are truly suffering—and with some of these diseases, to often terribly.

And, it doesn’t end there, even those of us that are fortunate enough to avoid the diseases still have to live with the continual threat, along with the excessively high cost of health care that such high levels of disease creates.

There are those that believe that because many of these diseases have been around forever, that maybe we just have to live with them. Until now that may well have been the case. Fortunately, however, technology has now caught up to this segment of the health care system as well. It can now bring disease prevention and wellness levels of expertise not only up to, but even exceed, the high level of perfection that most of the rest of the health care system presently enjoys.

Usually any form of successful entry into the health care field is introduced directly through the medical profession itself, whether it involves the introduction of new equipment, new tools, new systems, or new concepts. Furthermore, those additions are usually carefully designed around supporting the current medical system. The system being proposed here is designed to bring more balance into the overall health care system with far more emphasis on the individual’s and public’s best interest. This would be accomplished by introducing into the health care system an effective preventive and wellness program, basically in the form of an addition to the current medical system.

The proposed system involves the addition of a highly sophisticated national medical information system, very unique for a number of reasons. First, not only is it designed to more fully accommodate the needs of the patient and the public, but it’s also a system that would be legislated into existence and controlled by the public through a public commission.

Another logical question that comes up is, how can an electronic engineer with no medical background, possibly hope to accomplish anything like this in health care?

The answer to that is very simple, because primarily what is required here is a special electronic processing system that has the capacity to capture key health data already established by the medical experts and correlate that data to human health in an effective, thorough and efficient manner. As mentioned, it involves a highly advanced national medical information system, completely new to the health care industry.

There are basically two technologies involved here. They include highly advanced clinical laboratory science–a branch of the current medical system–and advanced computer technology, including supercomputers.

With most of us, our knowledge of clinical laboratory science is limited to what we are exposed to through our physician. Whenever we have a questionable health problem our physician will usually ‘run’ some lab tests. Most of these tests involve clinical laboratory science.

What most of us don’t know is that CLS is sort of a separate branch of the current medical system, and is a very rapidly advancing science, in fact so much so that it is far exceeding the capability of the present medical system to fully utilize all of its latest developments. In recent years, the industry has become highly computerized both in its laboratories and research.

Lets read a couple of paragraphs from the book that I believe you will find very interesting, one involves the bio-chemical make-up of the human body (primarily what CLS is based on) and the second discusses major progress recently made in clinical laboratory science and what this progress could mean to us.

First, let’s take a look at the bio-chemical aspects of the human body. These statements I will be reading from the book are opinions and statement by experts in the clinical laboratory science field. Most of them are referenced from text books located In the University of Michigan Medical Library. For the purpose of this reading I’ll skip their names. This is on page 18 in my book. High Return Investments – Why the Majority of Traders Don’t Win!

Filed under: Finance, Investing — Sacha Tarkovsky @ 9:18 pm

Lets face it, we all want high return investments but the majority of investors achieve mediocre returns and this is they don’t understand two important facts.

If they did, they could be on their way to far higher returns And a true high yield investment.

Let’s look at the above in more detail and two keys to making huge returns from your investment.

1. Success Has U in it!

What does this mean? Well, if you want to get rich you are going to have to do it for yourself.

Forget your broker, asset manager and friends, you need to step up and accept it’s down to you. This is true of anything in life, not just high return investments.

Don’t worry. its not as daunting as it seems.

If you see a trade make your own mind up and don’t listen to others - Do as you think best.

Let’s give you some help on how to do this.

2. Most investors can’t handle big gains!

You may think I am joking, as we all want big gains, don’t we? True, but most of us cannot cope with the mental aspect of accepting them. Let’s look at this in more detail and it will all become clear.

Look at a chart on any currency or commodity and what do you see?

Big trends that go on for months and years, most traders can get in on them, but can’t stay with them. This is the problem and prevents them from getting a high yield investment.

Why? Because human emotions work against them, and they can never turn their trades into the profits that are staring them in the face.

For example, many traders enter a trade and are up say $3,000 dollars on a $10,000 account they have got 50% profit – so let’s bank it - Wrong!

The big trades only come a few times a year, so you need to milk them for all their worth to turn your trades into a high yield investment.

Destructive emotions

The larger a profit becomes the more a trader wants to take it, but each small correction in the market that eats into account equity then plays havoc with their emotions.

The fear of losing what they have causes them to act in the wrong way.

In the end they snatch the profit, as they cant handle (and don’t have the conviction) to ride the trade for what it’s really worth.

They bank a couple of thousand dollars and then see the trade pile up $10 or 20,000 and their not in.

How to make a high yield investment work

A High yielding investment can be yours, but you need to do the following – Have the mental discipline to accept and go for huge gains!

This is not mentioned much, but it’s just as important as all the usual advice like cut your losses quickly etc in fact it’s far more important.

Look at any chart of currency or commodity and you can see long term trends that last months or years - So go for them.

Here is some sound advice to turn your trades into a high yielding investment.

1. Accept responsibility for your trading and do your homework.

2. Use a long term technical system.

3. Trade infrequently – The big trends only come a few times a year, so these are the ones you want to be in on.

4. Have the courage to go for these trends and ride them for all their worth.

5. Use options with lots of time to expiry and buy them at or near the money – They give you staying power.

6. Give yourself a wider stop and don’t bring it up to quickly where you can get stopped out by market noise.

7. Trade markets that trend long term such as currencies and energies.

8. Aim to make 100% per annum and ignore what all the experts tell you!

Your asset or fund manager will never give you a true high yield investment as they rely on commission and trading frequently to make a living and this is not going to help you make profits!

Do the above and you will soon see that if you pick your own trades and have courage and confidence - You can beat any fund manager and create a high yield investment they will envy!

Atkins Diet: An Overview

In the past, it has become a household way of life to eat bread, rice, fruit and other healthy foods that are supposed to help you lose weight. Dr. Atkins began a journey in the early 70’s that was going to change all of that. Any diet that puts eggs, cheese, and meat before the aforementioned “healthy foods” is complete and utter blasphemy.

A recent study was done to disprove the Atkins Diet yet after three months, the overweight men and women had lost an average of 8.6 kilograms, 4.5 more than people on the standard high-carb approach. So, all in all, if a person wants to lose the weight and help make their lives healthier and happier, Our Atkins package is right for you. This study only backs up the fact that Atkins is the way to go if you want to lose weight and keep the weight off.

Another important thing to point out is that this type of diet isn’t something to just do for a while and then stop all together. It takes some commitment, but once you see the results of the easy plan that is included in our package, than you will most certainly want to keep “living” this diet and you will see amazing results.

Dr. Atkins discovered through vast amounts of tests and also through trial and error there are four distinct phases of the Atkins diet, and they are as follows:

Phase 1: Induction
This first phase is going to be the most limiting of the four phases a typical Atkins Dieter will have to go through. The diet is going to take the body through the most rigorous weight loss overall and will be the most uncomfortable for the dieter as well. If a dieter can make it through Induction, they will be home free for the remainder of the diet.
As talked about before, the body will enter a state of Ketosis that in a nutshell trains the body to burn stored fat cells instead of glucose. Ketosis is a state the body goes into when there is no more expendable glucose to burn, so in order for the body to maintain energy, it must find other sources of energy to metabolize. The nutritional values of the amount of food a person undergoing this stage of the Atkins diet are limited to a moderate amount of meat, only 20 net grams of carbohydrates a day, no more than two cups of salad vegetables, only three tablespoons of heavy cream. Any alcoholic beverages or beverages that contain caffeine are not permitted.
It is not uncommon for a person who is going through the Atkins weight loss plan to lose as much as 10 pounds a week. This is a normal amount of weight to lose and will taper off as the diet goes on.

Phase 2: Ongoing Weight Loss (OWL)
This phase is where a person must find out where there specific “Critical Carbohydrate Level for Losing” stands. This is done by increasing the amount of carbohydrates by 5 grams each week until you find that you aren’t losing as much weight. This phase will last until you have arrived to within 10 lbs. of your weight loss goal.

Phase 3: Pre-maintenance
Once a person has reached this phase, they are basically home free and will begin to see that the Atkins Diet is more of a lifestyle, and not one of those “Get thin quick” schemes. This is where they begin to increase their carbohydrates even more than in phase 2 to see how much carbs there body will allow before they start to gain the weight back that they just lost. This could possibly mean that their body will not be in Ketosis anymore, but in order for the Atkins Diet to be successful, it won’t be necessary to sustain it forever.

Phase 4: Lifetime maintenance
This last and final phase is to make sure that a person doesn’t fall back into their old way of eating and keep the Atkins Diet going strong so that they can keep the weight off instead of put it back on again. This diet is not ever really over, which is why if done correctly can make anyone a healthier person. If a person begins to gain the weight back, then it might be necessary to go back to a prior phase just to re-evaluate their given eating habits, but make sure not to be discouraged in the process because this common.

http://www.atkins-weightloss.com is the leading website in Atkins Diet Materials. Luke Sanger has set out to help people in the same situation as himself that are overweight and need a solution. The Atkins Diet helped him and he wants to help others by providing them with a proven method to live the Atkins Diet and make it successful just as it was for him.

Joint Investing Important Financial Questions to Answer Before Marriage

Filed under: Finance, Investing — Mika Hamilton @ 8:05 pm

Marriage is on of the most important decisions you will make in your life. If you are lucky enough to have found someone you want to spend the rest of your life with, make sure you take the steps to ensure your marriage success. Nearly 50% of all marriages end in divorce. Even more staggering is that about 90% of marriage breaks have their origins in money problems. It is important to have a joint financial plan which both parties agree to and are comfortable with. Fully understanding what the financial future holds is important. When questions arise within the marriage the “plan” can be used to address and mediate these problems.

The first question that needs to be asked is “Who is responsible for handling the money?” This is a question that most people never consider before tying the knock. There is often an assumption that the other person is handling everything and then you find out that no one is controlling your finances. It is important that, as a couple, if you are planning on investing, that you have the financial stability to be able too. Make sure you decide on who is going to handle the checking, savings, investment, and emergency accounts. Who will be responsible for doing the investment research and monitor your growth. In addition, plan on having regular meetings in which you chat about your finances and investments. Couples usually do not discuss money unless they are in the middle of an argument and obviously nothing can be resolved then.

Another issue that will directly affect if, when, and how you invest is if both people are going to work. If both people are going to work will it be full or part time. This is important because having a budget and knowing exactly what your expenditures are, will reveal what available funds you have to invest. Additionally, if you have children who will be staying home with them? Obviously two incomes can allow for more investing however a single income, if used correctly, can be manipulated in such a way that it covers all necessities, a few luxury, and long term investment.

The topic of joint or separate checking accounts is a conflict which a married couple probably won’t see until well into their marriage. At that point the problem is unresolvable. Make sure you decide if you will have joint checking, savings, investment accounts or will each person have their own. Many people share a joint checking and saving which money from both incomes is deposited into for household expenses. Then there can be joint investment accounts which will benefit the whole family. Due to companies offering their employees 401K and IRAs, those should be kept separate.

Make sure you chat about what each person’s long and short term goals are. After ten years of marriage you don’t want to find out one person has longed to retire early and sail around the world while you have envision something much less adventurous. Knowing long and short term goals will allow your financial advisor to diversify your investments in such a way that each of your retirement dreams can be achieved.

Most pre-marriage planning has to do with the wedding. Very few people have the foresight and the will to actually plan a marriage. Take the time and effort to openly discuss money and investments. Being true partners before marriage and solving the conflicts before they happen will not only make your wedding day less stressful but may, in the end, save your marriage.

Some Tips For Choosing The Right Baby Shower Favors

When it comes to planning a baby shower, few things are as important as the choice of baby shower favors.

Choosing the right baby shower favors is vital to planning and hosting a successful baby shower and it will be those baby shower favors that guests will remember long after the baby shower itself has faded into memory.

Many guests will take their baby shower favors home to cherish, so it is important to choose those party favors wisely.

What If You Know The Gender Of The Baby

Of course one of the first considerations when it comes to choosing baby shower favors is the color, and choosing pink or blue can be a difficult decision.

If the gender of the baby is known in advance, of course, this decision becomes a lot easier, and these days it is not unusual for moms to be to know if a daughter or a son is on the way. Knowing the gender of the baby certainly makes the decorating, and the choice of baby shower favors a lot easier.

What If You Do Not Know The Gender Of The Baby

If the gender of the baby remains a mystery, choosing baby shower favors in a verity of colors, including pink and blue, is a good choice. Another good choice is to choose baby shower favors that are practical and useful as well as beautiful.

Some good examples of practical and useful baby shower favors include picture frames, mugs, glasses and vases. Many baby shower hosts like to fill mugs, glasses, vases or champagne flutes with candy or other treats, and top them off with a nice ribbon or piece of lace.

The baby shower favors are a hit year after year, and many baby shower guests enjoy the thoughtfulness of the special gifts.

Customizing The Baby Shower Favors

Many hosts have begun to take the choice of baby shower favors a step further by customizing those baby shower favors for each guest.

Knowing a bit about each of the invited guests can make this job a lot easier, and getting together with family and friends is a great way to create the customized and beautiful baby shower favors in the comfort of your own home.

Start Shopping For The Baby Shower Favors As Soon As Possible

No matter what type of baby shower favors you choose, however, it is important to start shopping for the baby shower favors as early as possible.

The date for the baby shower may seem far away now, but it has a way of creeping up, and getting those baby shower favors ordered early will help relieve some of the burden and free the host to do all the other things that are required to make a baby shower come off without a hitch.

Dealing With Tests From Women

Filed under: Dating, Relationships — Stephen N. @ 4:38 pm

Ever feel like a woman is testing you? And I am not talking about testing your intellectual capacity either. Women definitely test men, particularly when they first start dating.

For example, say she runs late three times in a row when meeting you. And when I say late, I mean over 10 minutes. If someone arrives to a date, and is less than 10 minutes late, no big deal. If it is more than 10 minutes…I take note.

So, she is late three times in a row, what do you do?

Most guys don’t say a word, fearing upsetting her, and losing her “highly valuable” affection. Why guys value someone who disrespects them over and over is a chronic problem – something I am out to remedy.

What is really happening here is – she is testing you. She wants to see, subconsciously, how you are going to react. She wants you to prove to her that you are secure and confident enough to take the lead and set your boundary.

Biologically, testing from women is necessary. She is screening you to see if you are “man enough”, to help her feel secure with you. Women want MEN in their lives (not wimpy boys). They crave masculine energy and affection.

In our products we cover this at length. Understanding this is a cornerstone to having mastery with dating and relationships.

If she tests you a time or two, no problem – that is good, and healthy – as long as you know how to pass the test! (See below)

If the testing continues, walk away – she needs help, and it’s a kind of help you can’t provide.

The key is to handle tests like a gentleman, while delivering a clear message that her lateness is unacceptable. Here is EXACTLY how I handled such a situation recently. I hope it helps you out.

I was awaiting her arrival at the cinema. At 10 minutes past, I got in line for the tickets and purchased my ticket while being sure that I could return it if necessary. At 20 minutes past, I crossed the street and sat in a café, and started making some calls (other women, of course, on the list – I was a bachelor at the time). She phoned at 25 past, and was out in front of the cinema. Here was our conversation:

She: “I am so sorry Stephen, I got stuck at work late. I am here, where are you?”
Me: “I am across the street in the café, just doing a little work”
She: “Oh, OK, I will be right over”
Me: “Be sure to get your ticket, I have mine – I was afraid they would sell out, and not knowing if you were going to make it, I only purchased one. Go ahead and get your ticket, and I will meet you over there in 5 minutes, gotta pay my bill”
She: “Ok, see you in a minute – again, sorry I was late”

See what I did here? Instead of changing the slightest bit of my schedule, I went forward without her. The plan had been to meet at the cinema, and then go for coffee. So, that’s what I did. Also, because she was late, she now had to furnish her own ticket (this being the third time she was late, I was definitely not paying for anything). I did all of this without getting angry at all, or having to say a word.

And, guess what…she was never late again. Once you make the wallet pay for the lateness, it seems to stop! I eventually lost interest in her, and her lateness was a major contributing factor.

I advocate action over words anytime. Why say something if you can indicate it with cool, smooth behavior? Less is more here. If you can tell her that her lateness is unacceptable by simply behaving with self-respect (continuing my evening with or without her) this is much more powerful than:

“Uh, you know, when you’re late, it really upsets me. I feel hurt and slighted..”

This may be true, but it is not a MASCULINE solution to the problem. The masculine solution is to be kind, yes, but to also be autonomous.

So, if she is late, when she arrives you have taken a call and have to make her wait a few moments before you can see her. I have even been known to make/take a fake phone call. Feel free to throw in something like, “It is 5:20pm now, let’s talk in a few hours OK?” This shows her that you have carried on with your business. Make her stand around for a moment or two, feeling the discomfort caused by her lateness. This works way better than you standing there like the headmaster checking his watch – got it?

In conclusion, the best way to handle tests from women is to simply sidestep them, they are a small bump along the road of your life. Keep living, make her catch up. If she continually tests you, then you better be firm with her and say something like:

“Let me be honest with you. I like you – OK? But, when you are late, which happens often, I lose attraction for you. Being reliable is high on my list, and I really want this to work out. I tend to lose interest though when issues like this continually surface.”

By telling her that you lose attraction for her (which is true, right guys?), the stakes become very high suddenly. Women pride themselves on being attractive to men, and if her behavior is causing that to diminish…well then, you’ve just found the sweet spot.

Ultimately, we are all seeking healthy, positive, and productive relationships with people. If someone continually disrespects us by being late, or by behaving immaturely, we have to step back and ask – why am I involved with her in the first place? And, an even better question…why am I even still attracted to her?

Feel free to walk away gentlemen. There are single women everywhere who will treat you with respect and who will be on time to see you.

Try this out in real life, and send me any questions or experiences you may have with it. What you experience and discover can be of benefit to us all.

Thanks a lot guys.

Wishing you well,

Your Pets and Your Guardian Angel

Filed under: Pets — Tom T. Moore @ 3:59 pm

If you are like most people, you consider your pets to be part of your family. You love them and receive much love in return, and you distress when they become ill or lost for even a short time. Below I’m going to give you some unique suggestions on lowering your stress level when events seem to be worrisome or even in crises situations with those lovable family members.

About ten years ago, in reading spiritual articles and books, I kept noticing the word “benevolent” used in stories about Guardian Angels and their relationship to us. One day I read a suggestion to request benevolent outcomes for events in your life. I decided to try it out, and was amazed how PERFECTLY it worked for everything, from small requests such as a parking spot next to a busy restaurant or a seat on the subway to the really important situations in my business and personal life. After having made these requests between 10,000 and 15,000 times over the years, I am firmly convinced that our Guardian Angels are there to assist us in living more gentle lives. We just have to ask.

So how do we utilize these requests with our pets? As an example, one of my dogs, Sandy, will roam the neighborhood if we accidentally leave the gate open, which certainly at the very least could mean the permanent loss of a sweet, lovable dog. When this happens, I have immediately requested out loud, “I request a Most Benevolent Outcome for finding Sandy safe and sound. Thank you.” You always thank your Guardian Angel and make these requests with emotion, as that works best. Requesting a Benevolent Outcome always takes the stress and worry away, as I KNOW that I’m going to find her.

When it’s time to add a pet into your family, you say, “I request a Most Benevolent Outcome for finding the perfect pet for our family. Thank you.” When you go to an animal shelter, possibly one of the attendants points out a pet that just arrived that morning, even just a few minutes before you arrived. Or you will just be drawn to one particular animal that in your heart you know is the perfect companion for your family. Even before you go, one of your friends calls to tell you about a new litter. Your Guardian Angel works in amazing ways, and I can assure you it’s FUN to sit back and see how the pieces of the puzzle come together when you make requests for MBO’s (as I call them). Just remember that requesting Benevolent Outcomes has to be benevolent for all concerned.

Next, you can request a Benevolent Outcome for choosing the right food and vitamins for your pet. And you can request a Benevolent Outcome for visits to the veterinarian. When your pet is sick, that can really cause you to be concerned and worry for their welfare. One lady told me how her cat was recently in distress, so she took her cat to the veterinarian and requested a MBO that the cat would be fine. She was greatly relieved to be told by the vet that it was an easy problem to treat.

One of our previous female dogs had a parvo type disease that is fatal 99 out of 100 times. We requested a Benevolent Outcome for her recovery, and then had the “inspiration” to start feeding her large amounts of the same vitamin E we took for our health. Her blood count slowly increased to the point where she completely recovered.

I’m going to give you something else that works when you see an animal on TV that has been injured, tortured, or trapped. You can feel quite frustrated that you can’t help that animal in person. But you can say out loud, “I ask that any and all beings come to the aid of this animal and comfort, aid, and assist this animal in any and all ways. Thank you.” These requests are not acted upon by your Guardian Angel, but by other Angelic beings, and INSTANTLY. You do not limit the request to humans, as it could be other animals or Angelic beings that actually physically assist that animal in distress. Then you will feel better that at least you did what you could to aid that animal. This confidence will be higher if you have been requesting Benevolent Outcomes in your life, so you know from direct experience and knowledge that making these requests really work!

Your life with your pet companions will be much less stressful and worry-free when you request Benevolent Outcomes from the time that you decide to add them to your family and all through their lives with you. I wish you all a Good Life!

Rule of Thirds - Think Again

Filed under: Arts-and-Entertainment, Photography — Edward Ginsberg @ 2:49 pm

If you search Google for ‘rule of thirds,’ you will get more than 3 million returns. Clearly it is a popular rule and deserves to be looked at closely. I examined about 50 of these websites and found them all to accept the premise that using the rule of thirds is a key to producing good photographs, although a few suggested that the rule should be viewed more as a guide.
The following comments were typical:

‘A handy rule to follow that will help you to compose a quality photo every time is the rule of thirds.’

‘Everything you see in a frame needs to be composed along the lines of the rule of thirds.’

‘Using the Rule of Thirds helps produce nicely balanced easy on the eye pictures.’

This advice is usually followed by a diagram showing how the rule of thirds is calculated. A small number of the sites go on to say that the rule of thirds was derived from the Golden Mean. Some even give a brief history of the Golden Mean. At least one writer justifies the use of the rule of thirds based on eye-scan studies.

What is the rule of thirds? It is a guide for positioning the center of interest in a photograph. According to this rule, there are four preferred points to place a center of interest. To find these points, draw imaginary parallel lines across your camera’s viewfinder at the one-third and two-thirds positions. Do this in both the horizontal and vertical directions. These four lines will meet at four points. The points mark where the center of interest should be placed.

As I said, many sites make the claim that the rule of thirds is derived from the Golden Mean. And what is the Golden Mean (see also: Golden Cup, Golden Triangle, Golden Rectangle, Golden Ratio, Golden Spiral, all based on approximately the same idea). The Golden Mean is a ratio of two numbers (approximately 1:.62). It can be represented by a line that is divided so that the shorter segment is about .38 and the longer about .62 of the length. A golden rectangle is a rectangle whose sides have the ratio of 1:.62. In Diagram 2 the entire figure is a Golden Rectangle. By dividing the large rectangle at the .618 position, we get a square and another Golden rectangle.

As there are many mathematic sites that give the history and the derivation of the Golden Mean, there is no reason to repeat that information here. I haven’t found any sites that give the history of the rule of thirds. It is always referred to as a simplification of the Golden Mean or Golden Rectangle.
But is it? Not exactly. First, the rule of thirds uses lines placed at the 33% and 67% positions, whereas the Golden Mean places its line at 62%. So already we’re 5% off. That’s not too bad. But there is another problem. The rule of thirds is about points, the four points where the parallel lines meet. The Golden Mean is about a line. Points and lines are not the same thing.
There is another problem. The ratio of the sides of the Golden Rectangle is approximately 3:2, or about the same as the sides of a 35mm negative. But the ratio of the sides of most consumer digital cameras is 4:3. Not only that, but prints often have a different height-to-width ratio (aspect) so your perfectly composed photograph is cropped when it is printed.

But if it works, forget all about these arguments. The most important thing is to get superior photographs. So the next question is, ‘Does it work?’

Eye-tracking studies. There have been a number of scientific studies, many ongoing, to determine how a viewer’s eyes move when he looks at a piece of art. The early results show that there is no universal eye-scan pattern. It depends, in part, on what the viewer is looking for and his level of expertise.

Do viewers really prefer paintings and photographs that use the rule of thirds? I am not aware of any studies done on the rule of thirds, but there have been quite a few on the Golden Rectangle.

The first of many objectives studies was done in the 1870s by the German psychologist G. T. Fechner. He presented his subjects with a set of ten rectangles of varied proportions and asked them to choose the one they found most pleasing. Although the Golden Rectangle was the favorite, it was chosen by only 35% of the subjects. The second favorite, a rectangle with a 1:1.5 ratio, was picked by 21% of the subjects.

Studies on rectangular preference have continued to the present with mixed results. Some researchers have found a preference for the Golden Mean while others have not. However, in those studies where a preference was found, it was never higher than 35%.

In 1894 the American psychologist Edgar Pierce did another interesting experiment. He asked people to place a line in a frame in the position they found most pleasing. The Golden Ratio was the most popular position. However, when Pierce placed additional lines on both sides of the moveable line, the subjects tended to move their line from the Golden Mean position to a position about half-way between the closest fixed lines.

Conclusion. First of all, for reasons pointed out above, the rule of thirds and the Golden Rectangle are not the same thing. One deals with points and the other deals with lines. Second, objective studies show that although there probably is a preference for art based on Golden Rectangle proportions, at best it is only preferred by 35% of viewers. Finally, the studies done by Pierce showed that subjects initially showed a preference for a line placed at about the 60% position in the frame. However, they changed their preference when additional lines were put into the frame. Since the rule of thirds doesn’t take into consideration anything but placement of the center of interest, perhaps it’s too simple a concept to be used in composing complex photographs.
