Your First Home Theater Network

Only a few years ago, home theaters consisted of large tube-based TVs, VCRs, and stereos with two speakers. Today, home theaters consist of flat-panel HDTVs, receivers, surround sound speakers, DVD players, and more. So what components will make up the home theater of tomorrow? Audio, video, and data distribution will be key to any future home theater, which will soon morph into a home theater network.

Today’s home theater is limited to a single room. For example, a show recorded on a DVR can only be viewed on the TV to which the DVR is connected; music heard from the speakers of a home theater can only be heard in the room in which the speakers are placed. However, by establishing a home theater network, owners expand the capabilities of their home theater by creating a system capable of sending a recorded TV show to any bedroom, or playing music on speakers throughout the property.

The equipment needed to change a home theater into a home theater network includes a router, receiver, and a home theater PC (HTPC). The router distributes data and allows Ethernet-capable devices in a home theater to connect to the Internet and a home network. The receiver distributes audio and video from a home theater to multiple rooms. Note, the simple 5.1 surround sound receivers of today are not capable of this function. Newer receivers with multiple-zone outputs will be necessary for a home theater network. Finally, the HTPC functions as a source for audio, video, and data. For example, the HTPC can be used as a central server where an owner can save all of his music, video, pictures, and data. An HTPC also has the ability to serve as a DVR, and record TV shows. Since the HTPC is a computer, its capabilities are essentially endless.

As prices drop, more people are trading in their large, tube-based TVs and stereos for thin, high-definition TVs and multi-zone output receivers. Also, more people are building home networks with their laptops and multiple computers. The merging of the home theater and home network into a home theater network will arrive in the not–too-distant future. Your first home theater network lies just around the corner.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome: What is It and How Do You Know if You Have It?

Filed under: Health-and-Fitness — Dr. Scot Lewey @ 10:19 pm

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the most common diagnosis (25-50%) given to people referred to stomach and intestine specialists. It is reported to affect between 10-15% of people in the U.S. However, it cannot be diagnosed by any specific tests. It is diagnosed by criteria. The criteria are called the Rome II diagnostic criteria because a group of doctors meet periodically to establish rules for labeling intestinal conditions that have no diagnostic tests.

These conditions are called syndromes because they don’t meet the definition for a disease. They don’t have a specific known cause and/or diagnostic test(s). They are often referred to as “functional” problems. The cause of the functional problem in IBS is not known. By definition there is no abnormality that can be seen on a biopsy, x-ray, blood or stool test. The diagnosis is made by applying criteria after exclusion of other conditions or diseases of the intestine. There is not a universally agreed upon consensus for what constitutes an adequate evaluation to exclude other causes.

For IBS the criteria required to make the diagnosis is the presence of abdominal pain or discomfort that has been present for at least 3 months in the past year (not necessarily consecutively) and has at least two out of three of the following features:

1. The pain or discomfort is relieved with a bowel movement.

2. The beginning of pain or discomfort is associated with a change in frequency of bowel movements.

3. The beginning of pain or discomfort is associated with a change in the appearance or consistency (hardness or softness) or stools.

There are other symptoms that doctors use to support the diagnosis of IBS and to further divide it into three different categories. The three categories are determined by whether there is a predominant stool pattern of diarrhea or constipation or is the stool pattern alternating diarrhea and constipation. The supporting symptoms are as follows.

1.

2. >3 bowel movements per day (diarrhea)

3. Hard or lumpy stools

4. Loose, mushy or watery stools

5. Straining during a bowel movement

6. Urgency, or the sense that you need to rush to the bathroom to have a bowel movement

7. Feeling of incomplete emptying after a bowel movement

8. Passage of mucus or whitish material during a bowel movement

9. Feeling of abdominal fullness, bloating or swelling

Therefore, the diagnosis is made by a report of the symptoms and the doctor excluding other causes. The extent to which other conditions are excluded is highly variable and doctor dependent. Self-diagnosis of IBS should be avoided because serious conditions can cause symptoms that mimic IBS.

Theories of the cause of IBS are not proven. Serotonin, a chemical present in both the brain and the gut, has been suspected. An imbalance in serotonin has been blamed for IBS. Serotonin increases the contractions of the intestine. Several medications that either increase or decrease serotonin have been developed to treat constipation or diarrhea predominant IBS.

More recently, research has been focusing on the common report of many people with IBS of a distinct time that their IBS symptoms began, often after some type of intestinal infection such as food poisoning, traveler’s diarrhea or gastroenteritis. This “post-infectious” theory has lead to theories of bowel injury and/or alterations in bacteria in the intestine. An imbalance of “good and bad” bacteria in the intestine is a theory. Some are treating people with antibiotics and/or probiotics. Antibiotics kill bacteria. Probiotics are live bacteria that are “good bacteria” like acidophilus and lactobacillus that can be taken as pill, capsule, powder or eaten or drank in yogurt or milk.

Food intolerances have been proposed as a cause of IBS by some, especially in Europe, but have not been accepted by most doctors in the U.S. Trials of elimination diets, with or without the use of food allergy or antibody tests have been reported in a few studies or a lot of testimonials to be helpful.

Lactose intolerance is a common condition that can cause symptoms that may be misdiagnosed as IBS and resolve with avoidance of lactose. Undiagnosed colitis or Crohn’s disease can be a cause of symptoms that can be diagnosed by colonoscopy with biopsy of the intestine. Blood tests for colitis and Crohn’s disease also now exist.

More recently, undiagnosed Celiac disease has emerged as a cause of what had been previously been diagnosed as IBS in as many of 20% of people. Those with a diagnosis of IBS should be screened for Celiac disease, as it is a common condition, affecting 1 in 100 people. The symptoms of abdominal pain, bloating, gas and diarrhea are common symptoms of Celiac disease and it is now known that untreated Celiacs can be constipated. Gluten free diet relieves these symptoms in people who are gluten sensitive. Further information about irritable bowel syndrome, food intolerance, colitis, Crohn’s disease, lactose intolerance and Celiac disease may be found at www.thefooddoc.com

If you have symptoms suggestive of IBS or have been diagnosed as having IBS it is important that you have an evaluation by a physician and other causes including colitis, Crohn’s disease, lactose intolerance, and Celiac disease are excluded. Food intolerance should also be considered. Minimum evaluation should include a blood count, stool tests for blood and pus cells, screening lab tests for Celiac disease, colitis, Crohn’s and a colonoscopy. Talk to your doctor about the diagnosis and how other causes can be or have been excluded before accepting the diagnosis of IBS.

Why Consider an Arizona Real Estate Investment in Scottsdale

Scottsdale remains one of the highest sought after areas in Arizona today for real estate investing due to the fact that it is argued today to be the place in Arizona with the best quality of living. The City continues to see rapid growth and has the benefit of tourism to boost rental revenue for investment properties in the area.

This article will highlight three reasons why one should consider property investment in Scottsdale Arizona.

Firstly, Scottsdale has lots of sunshine and to be precise 330 days of it a year. This results in the place having the distinction as one of the best golfing areas in the United States. The combined quality and quantity of golfing resorts in the area make the area a must see destination for golfing enthusiasts worldwide when they visit Arizona. This also drives a boom in related accommodation and many famed golfers have decided to reside in the Scottsdale area driving up the prices of property somewhat.

Secondly, Scottsdale is where many celebrities reside because of its extreme wealth. The region has now been known nationally as the place for luxury and real estate. This reputation has continued to fuel a growth in Scottsdale Arizona property. In a study in 2005, Scottsdale is one of the two cities outside of California ranked in the top 10 markets for luxury home sales. This means that there is a large amount of money flowing into the area for high end luxury properties and represents a continued demand for luxury real estate there.

Thirdly, Scottsdale is a premium holiday destination in the United States with its more than 70 resorts and hotels which continue to attract more than 7.5 million tourists annually and this means that accommodation occupancy rates and rentals are on the high side. This boom in tourist arrivals in recent years represents a great potential for rental yield in holiday type property accommodation. A property in a good location with a good property management company can represent a good source of monthly cash flow if you play your stakes right here.

In conclusion, we have covered three excellent reasons why you should consider an Arizona Real Estate investment in Scottsdale and perhaps in your next holiday trip there you might consider taking a look at the property investment options open to your financial budget and preference.

Let’s Dance

Filed under: Arts-and-Entertainment, Poetry — Bob Roach @ 8:18 pm

There is something about a dance,
that makes the world seem right.
Far away from the real world,
away from struggles or fright.

You can’t really explain it,
although it is much like a dream.
The two of us in a bubble,
as if we were a team.

The dream goes on,
the night is young.
And we are united.
We are one.

No desire to sit just yet,
we truly are taking a chance.
Two have met and become one,
not love but surely romance.

One step, two step
My mind is in a spin.
Just moving to the feeling,
like clouds in the wind.

The music must be rhythmic,
the beverage, that of choice.
It seems like when I dance,
it gives me a special voice.

A voice to say who I am,
to say that I am free.
To say that at this moment
anyone can I be.

It seems to be just the two of us,
the lights are very low.
No one else in our universe,
just moving to and fro.

My heart is beating faster,
I did not know I could feel this way.
I wish this moment could last forever,
forever and a day.

But when the dance is over,
and reality must set in.
I dream about the dancing
as I join the world again.

Lima’s Devouring Winter Dew [a poem with Commentary]

Filed under: Arts-and-Entertainment, Poetry — Dennis Siluk @ 7:30 pm

Lima’s Devouring Winter Dew

The mist of the pacific flows cool and fair—
On city streets that are far and near
With haunted blows, from Lima’s shadows.
Ah! Its pale magic mist now fills the air

Here I sit, at El Parquetito’s café
With a splendid delightful cup of coffee
As the phantom sun awakes and sweats
Trying to peek through Lima’s wintry cloak!

#1376 [7/5/2006] Written at EP Café, on a pale winter afternoon in Lima [July], Peru; dedicated to Rosa and Enrique, who had the pleasure to look up into this drab misty sky with me in Lima at 1:00 PM. Then after lunch, around 2:00 PM, the sun came out, but our lunch was now over. Wintertime in the central part of Lima is pale; with misty grays a lot of the time. And when the sun comes out, you got to bottle it, or run to it to enjoy the few hours you will have it. Winter’s in Lima are ‘Pale Dawns’ all day long, or can be. That is because you sit almost on top of the ocean. In farther out areas of Lima, the sun does come out. So today I was inspired to write about its bleakness, whereas, I normally write about all the positives; yet this can be taken as a positive, because when the sun does come, I parade around like a wild duck trying to suck up all the sun’s rays I can get.

Making Money with Las Vegas Real Estate Investment

Las Vegas in the state of Nevada remains today ever more than before one of the top real estate investment locations in the United States. Many real estate investors have been flocking into the state to invest in property in the area and there is a good chance that the growth of the gaming industry there will continue to spur economic growth.

This article will highlight three areas to consider when choosing your next property investment in Las Vegas.

Firstly, consider proximity of your property to the strip or even better purchase an apartment in the Casino itself. In real estate investment, the prime indicator of capital growth is rental yield. By purchasing a property near to the strip, your occupancy rate and rental yield of your property would be higher than say a little near the fringe of town. The latest developments by W Hotels & Resorts feature for instance apartments that they rent out on your behalf and you collect the rental proceeds.

Secondly, city rejuvenation projects may also provide an avenue for growth. The city realising that much of the human population in Nevada started to migrate away from the city centre and so has embarked on a redevelopment project so as to attract the crowd back to the city centre. One of the tenets of real estate investment is to invest in the path of progress and you might want to invest in properties that are in the newly redeveloped areas in that part of Nevada.

Thirdly, remember the impact of Nellis Air Force Base. This base remains one of the drivers of the need for services in Nevada and commercial property surrounding the area may provide somewhat good rental yields for companies and businesses that wish to provide services to the base employees.

In conclusion, Nevada today ever that before, remains an important investment area for real estate investment in the United States with the ever increasing tourist traffic and convention traffic flooding into the area. Spending some time considering real estate investing in Las Vegas is therefore going to be a profitable thing for you this weekend. Start taking some massive action today and your financial future awaits you.

How to Make Money With Your Rental Property Investment

Everyday in the investment industry a new course or newsletter is born promising you vast fortunes if you purchase their latest trading strategy or ebook. What most of them omit to tell you is that there is a vast gap between the level of proficiency that the gurus have in making money and the average beginner. Recently, Forbes magazine after an extensive study of all the various rich and wealthy people that they have in their list, realised that real estate and property investment remains as one of the best ways to become a millionaire or billionaire today.

Most people start their real estate investment after they pay off their first home and then start deciding how better to manage their funds and investments. This article goes on to explain three things you need to note if you decide to make a rental property investment for monthly cash flow purposes.

Decide on class of property

For first time property investors, most people will not have enough capital to invest in large commercial projects but do not be put off by this class of property investments. Some neighbourhood strips or shop houses may provide you with a better rental yield then say a residential property in a bad neighbourhood. The rule of thumb is to choose a property that you can manage.

The difference between commercial property and residential property is one of maintenance. While substantively the real estate law governing tenancy for both is the same, however practically there is a difference. If you have a commercial property, your tenant will usually repair and remedy any defects himself because they have a business to run and the property defect will look bad on them. Some residential tenants on the other hand love to run to the landlord for the slightest leak and this can be a hassle. Thus spend some time considering what class of property you wish to acquire and then focus on shortlisting suitable properties.

Decide on the amount of financing

Depending on the state that you are in, you might want to make a trip to your mortgage broker to figure out how much leverage you can get on your property. The more financing that you get, the more your return on your investment will be because you are using less of your own money to control more real estate.

Some states have mandatory down payment laws that are meant to cool the property sectors in certain areas and may reduce percentage of financing that you can use for the property. Thus always spend some time to consider how much money you can afford for the down payment. Remember that if you should decide to renovate the property that you are acquiring, that will also cost money so always consider how much you have to spend before going around on your acquisition spree.

Analyze the rental – mortgage difference to get a positive cash flow

Most advocates of the cash flow investment concept will tell you that you must generate a good monthly cash flow from your investment. This means that the amount of money that you keep in your bank account each month from the rental after deducting expenses for taxes and mortgage instalment payments must be substantial.

There are those that love to purchase property based on impulse and feel for the property. This approach may not be wrong in itself, but should always be done after you do your maths and rental cash flow calculations. Remember to take into account the downside of the rental yield in a bad year especially if you are purchasing this property in a good year.

In conclusion, making a monthly cash flow with rental property is possible if you spend some time to do your homework before purchasing your next real estate investment rental property. Keep your eyes open for the next real estate bargain and it may come your way soon. Start taking massive action to achieve your real estate investment goals today and your dreams for a good monthly cash flow may start appearing sooner than you think.

The Reciprocal Linking Train Hasn’t Left the Building… Yet

Filed under: Internet-and-Businesses-Online, SEO — Barry Flames @ 4:39 pm

Look around you, the SEO industry is routinely at least 6-12 months behind any new search engine trends good or bad. As a result ‘SEO pros’ and amateurs alike clamour to find the next hot-button regime that will set them apart from the competition. Lately there has been increased discussion pertaining to the declining importance of reciprocal linking and linking in general. Some SEO pundits claim it’s time to drop reciprocal linking, my question is: in favour of what?

Reciprocal linking is simple: Site A links to Site B, Site B links to site A in return. Currently, there is sufficient evidence to suggest the major search engines are starting to devalue reciprocal linking and are smartening up to the quality of links. All reciprocal links are starting to become less and less important to increasing SERP positions, however, irrelevant reciprocal links are worth even less. (This means that relevant links are worth more-they do have worth!)

The fact of the matter is stupid webmasters (or those by choice) who link in ’spammy’ ways, (over 50 links on linking page, unrelated links to web site, etc.,) have less to show for their work, but, does this mean it’s time to abandon reciprocal linking all together? Not so fast, your haste may stunt your growth.

Yes reciprocal linking has reduced impact on influencing your SERP position, however, they still remain a viable method of increasing your ’search engine legitimacy’. High quality reciprocal links, and by high quality I mean links that are from worthy sites with relevant and rich content for your users, remain important components of the SEO puzzle and any linking strategy.

Even ‘low quality’ but relevant reciprocal linking remains an acceptable practice, if not for anything but community building. The largest community building sites on the internet, MySpace, Blogspot, all rely on community members linking to each other and vice-versa in some fashion. Although SERP positions may not increase dramatically (remember, they may a bit) the traffic through ‘word of mouth’ is worthy of the link.

Of course, the power of the relevant one-way link, Site A links to Site B with no link back to A, remains stronger. I don’t feel at this point there is any indication that one way links will be replaced as major indicators of SERP position. If you offer a unique item/distinct capability then webmasters will flock to you with links-nothing can beat high quality content.

Today, the major search engines are smart enough to discovery who has legitimate content and who doesn’t. Webmasters who are just starting out may find no other alternative but to establish reciprocal linking partnerships in order to get a start. There is a greater time investment regarding reciprocal linking campaigns when first starting compared to a firmly established web site.

Established web owners must look at two fundamental items: 1) create unique content and hopefully through word of mouth/community or SERP positions where you can acquire one way links, 2) reduce reliance and time invested into reciprocal linking, however, remain open to viable and profitable link partners. It’s not time to dump reciprocal linking, however, it is time to start moving our focus away form the ‘quick fix’ and towards more useful investments, namely, unique and distinct content for our users. SEO is becoming more than just links and code but capable writing on distinct topics.

Distinct SEO offers qualified SEO consultation combined with relevant business strategy planning. Soon to come from them is a SEO Book for web marketing.

Designing Computer Games

Filed under: Computers-and-Technology, Games — Philip Culver @ 3:27 pm

Computer game design has evolved as the career of a dream come true for hard core gaming fans. Designers of computer games are generally the people who love to play computer games as they can better understand the needs and desires from a game.

Every one who loves to play computer games dreams of having a career in computer game design. I also like to play computer games and since I played computer games I always dreamed of designing my own game.

Computer game industry is a huge industry and there are many jobs available in the computer game design industry. But the computer game design is very difficult, and requires a rigorous working knowledge of programming languages on different operating systems. For a good start in this field one can get a degree in computer science but this is also not an easy task. Only one, of my six friends I had in college that were computer science majors, could complete the course. This course is overloaded with advanced mathematics classes, tedious programming exercises and much more.

It’s only for people who love programming and don’t find it tedious. A computer game designer must be able to tolerate the tedium. Everyone have love for computer games in some or the other way around. One of my college friends that got his computer science degree is currently working for a well knowing game design company readily admits that this industry is not like he thought it would be.

Earlier, computer games used to be small programs and design teams consisted of just few people to program the game but today computer games are enormous programs that may take several years to complete even though many games have several production teams consisting of up to hundreds of different people working simultaneously on different aspects of the game. The sky is the limit for a good programmer as an every company desires an expert programmer. Seasoned programmers with several completed games in their records or profiles not only demands large salary but also have a lot say over the direction of the game.

Even if you are not good at programming there is nothing to worry about. There are many other jobs in the computer game design field. Good artists and writers are also required by game makers although they generally don’t make as much money. Graphic designers and other artists are all required to make a good game today as in today’s games graphics are extensively used.

Internet …. A Boom to the Gambling Industry

Before the advent of the Internet it was the belief that everyone who plays card games is a gambler. Playing card games was popular only among the rich and the idle in the pre-internet era. It was the modalities of playing card games that ensured that only those with ample time, money and resources could maintain the hobby of playing cards.

To play card games you were supposed to be a member of a card club or group, visit the club frequently and have a regular group of players. All this could be easily managed by the idle rich people but professional people didn’t have the time and the convenience to indulge themselves in such activities. Casinos were not accessible to most of the people as there was an expensive entry fee, demanded ample time and the convenience of visiting and playing for hours. Although these games were not always played for money but most of the players indulged themselves in these games in order to make quick money without any efforts. It was supposed to be a game of luck!

With the invention of internet the scenario of gambling and casinos changed completely. With the advent of the online card games the participants of these games have tremendously increased. Internet made it possible for people from all over the world to gather under one roof of internet and play games. Now, the players were not worried about getting nobody to play with in odd hours as you could be sure of finding at least a few people to play with online card games as internet is accessed by people from all over the world. In most of the games you can play against an automated dealer or computer and other players were not required. Online card games completely changed the scenario of gambling as anyone with a computer, an internet connection and a credit card can connect to the internet and play online games for as much time as he desires. Most of the conventional card games have been transformed into online card games. Along with the blackjack and poker which are famous whether online or offline there are thousands of online card game sites with all regular card games like poker, bridge, cribbage, euchre, hearts, canasta, rummy, cribbage, solitaire and spades which exist as much loved and often played online cad games.

Multi player online card game sites are also available that provides the facility to gamble with each other without coming in close proximity with each other. Today, online card games is a multi billion dollar industry and still flourishing and it is the convenience and the ease of accessing games online that have made the industry a money generator machine. The rate at which people are playing online card games a day will come when there will be a virtual Vegas on the net that would be as profitable as it is in the real world today.
