How Does a CD Player Work?

Today there is a wide range of CD players available for the consumer and choosing the right CD player can feel like an arduous task. Style, quality, design och technical solutions vary greatly between the different players. Some players are portable; others are included in larger sound systems. Some players can only handle one disc at the time; others can easily skip between 50 discs or more. Some CD players are very cheap, others are highly expensive. The list goes on and on. Regardless of which CD player you choose it will however consist of three basic parts that are found in all moderns CD players: a drive motor, a tracking device and a laser and lens system. Another thing that all CD players have in common is that they interpret data that has been stored in the form of elongated bumps on a CD (compact disc).

The drive motor in your CD player is the part that makes the disc spin round and round at a correct pace. The drive motor will gradually adjust the speed, since the correct pace depends on which part of the disc that is currently being interpreted. At some spots, the pace will be no higher than 200 rpm, while at other spots the pace needs to be increased up to 500 rpm. As the disc is rotated round and round by the drive motor, the tracking mechanism will adjust the laser assembly and make it possible for the laser and lens system to focus on the miniscule bumps where data has been stored. The laser is constantly being pushed from the centre and outward over the disc by the tracking mechanism.

The data interpreted by the laser and lens system has been stored in the form of elongated bumps on the surface of the CD. One single bump is very small and no wider than 0.5 microns. The height is greater than 125 nanometres and the length is 0.83 microns or slightly more. All these bumps are very neatly organised at the surface of the CD in the form of a 5 kilometre (3.5 miles) long spiral.

The CD itself is made up by several different layers, including a polycarbonate layer and an aluminium layer. When the laser tries to interpret data that has been stored on the CD, it will first penetrate the polycarbonate layer. The aluminium layer will then reflect the laser beam, and the light alterations will be detected by a special optoelectronic mechanism in the CD player. Since the bumps in which data has been stored reflects light in a different way compared to the areas between the bumps (commonly referred to as ?lands?), the CD player can determine exactly which parts of the disc that is made up by bumps and which parts that are not.

If a CD is scratched or injured in any other way, it can be impossible for the CD player to interpret it. Sometimes only a minor part of the data will be skipped, but larger damages can render the entire CD useless. Always store your CD?s in a protective casing to decrease the risk of scratches. When you clean your CD?s, carefully move your hand from the centre and outwards to the edge rather than just swabbing around. Scratches that occur from a radial movement tend to be less damaging than other scratches.

The information you just read about CD players can be applied to most types of optic drives and can not only help you pick out a CD player for you home but also other types of optic drives such as car CD players and car DVD players.

Big Screen TV - Which Do I Want?

Many home theater enthusiasts prefer a big screen TV to the bulky projection systems. They sacrifice screen size for picture quality and space requirements. There are many types of televisions to choose from but we will cover the Plasma vs. LCD TV debate first.

Plasma TV is by far the coolest and most expensive. They are extra thin, (only a few inches) and very lightweight. They?re great for small rooms or apartments since they can be hung on the wall like a picture. The superior contrast, brightness and wide viewing angle of color plasma TV?s, have made them an excellent choice for viewing HDTV programming. The price of Plasma TV?s has been dropping recently with prices starting at around a thousand dollars all the way up to 20K for a top of line huge plasma TV.

LCD (liquid crystal display) TV’s are very similar to LCD computer monitors and offer video reproduction quality approaching that of plasma displays. LCD models generally cost less than comparable plasma models. They are extremely lightweight and thin and come in sizes from 7 inches to about 32 inches and more.

Of course as the big screen TV debate continues, we must not forget the standard CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) TV?s. These deliver great picture quality and are the most affordable by screen size. The negative is that they are very heavy and bulky. That is why they are losing ground to the slimmer, lightweight Plasma and LCD TV?s.

High Definition TV is becoming the new standard for TV?s. The current format for television broadcasting in America, as well as much of the world, is the NTSC format. While analog NTSC may have been the format of choice for nearly 50 years, digital broadcasting is revolutionizing the broadcast industry. High definition digital television broadcasting (HDTV) provides a much higher image resolution than NTSC. While NTSC could only provide around 650 lines of information per image, HDTV offers up to 1080 lines. This allows for much more detail and clarity.

Home Audio Speakers

Sound, also perceived as the sense of hearing, is an integral part of our lives. Without the ability to hear or reproduce sound we are not complete. Sound is the vibrations that travel through air and can be sensed by our ears. Thus it is a medium of communication. It is used to gather information and knowledge about properties of the environment surrounding us. Sound can travel through air, water, and solids. These help sound waves travel and are known as medium. In normal conditions, human can hear a varied frequency range. But, sometimes we need to amplify the sound output for better quality of hearing. This requires the help of speakers.

Speakers are devices, which convert electromagnetic signals into sound vibrations. Thus speakers are machines that enable us to hear sounds, which have their origin somewhere else. Speakers, also termed as loudspeakers are attached to an audio system, which provides the electromagnetic signals that are then reproduced in the wavelength, which humans can decipher. The loudspeaker is the most variable element in an audio system, and is responsible for marked audible differences between systems.

Home audio systems have come a long way since their inception as just another loudspeaker system. They have become a part and parcel of our every day lives. Today, many versions of home audio systems have evolved into our homes. Technological enhancements have made sure that we can take our audio or sound system wherever we go. As speaker systems are the most important part in the output of sound, they have evolved greatly. Many versions of speaker systems are available in the market today. Depending upon your choice of price and your perception of quality, you can opt for the one that best caters to your requirements.

Speakers are an integral part of any audio system, be it a simple radio or a home theatre system. Home audio speakers are generally multi-drive systems, i.e. they contain two or more drive units. These include woofers, midranges, tweeters, and sometimes horns or super tweeters. A home theatre system is complete only if all the above mentioned add-ons are attached with it to give a theatre-like sound experience. In home audio speaker specifications, the speakers are classified as ?N-way? speakers. It indicates the number of bands of different frequency into which the system divides the sound. A 2-way system consists of woofers and tweeters, a 3-way system consists of mid-range speakers with a combination of woofers and tweeters. It depends upon person to person; rather there exists different perceptions towards the quality of sound and thus the drives in a speaker.

If and when you decide upon purchasing a home audio speaker system, you will be spoilt for choice. They come in various ranges of quality and pricing, thus you need to decide carefully what caters to your specific set of requirements. Good audio companies make available a host of choices for speaker systems that can gel with your audio systems. They also provide different designs and creations of speakers that fit into your d?cor. You can place your systems in such a way that it gives you the optimum output.

Sim Cards, Cell Phones, Satellite Phones and a Region Free DVD Player, Take them with You

While you are on the run, moments will come when you will feel real lonely and you will like to play your memorable moments on your DVD. In that case your true solution would be a region free DVD player.

These devices are required for all who travel frequently

It is not only a sportsman that continues to be on the run over the days. There are many professionals around the world who are involved in professions that require constant travel and a nomadic life. Such professions may be that of businessman having a global customer base, an adventurer on constant search of exciting avenues, a travel guide, or a representative of a big organisation, a political leader, and even a Government Officer. What is pertinent in case of a sportsman on the run is also pertinent for these people. Every one of them require to communicate with his own people sometime or other and every one needs some relaxation in peaceful solitude going down the memory lane.

Communication and entertainment for groups

There may be occasions when in traveling you are not alone but a part of a group with heterogeneous background, with homogeneous object. It may be a team of sportsman, a group of businessmen, a caravan of pilgrims, or a party of tourists on the move. In such case though you might be in constant touch with your mates, the requirements of a cell phone, SIM card or Satellite phone will be even greater because each member will have his or her own circles to communicate or keep in touch with. And a region free DVD player can just cater to the exact requirement of divergent members liking to view divergent CDs and DVDs procured from different zones with different standards of PAL, NSTC, or SECAM, because every member to the team or group will be able to make use of it, such that any DVD procured from anywhere in the world, and using any standard can be playable on a region free DVD player.

Cell phones, satellite phones, SIM cards, and a region free DVD player for other uses

It is not that you require a cell phone, SIM card, satellite phone or a region free DVD player only to keep in touch with your own people or relive your memories of fond moments. There are several other reasons for which you will like to have these gadgets. Cell phone for example has reduced the global distance by bringing the world to your fingertips. You can access anyone anywhere in the world from a cell phone provided, that the region where the contact lives has a network or even dial-up ordinary phone system. Such requirements may be communication of commercial messages, interaction, and deliberation, intimating important issues or even a courtesy call. A SIM card, as already pointed out is the accessory to activate a cell phone. However, every SIM card may not be usable everywhere and even when usable, may cost too much in terms of roaming cell phones. It is therefore better to have a cell phone which is factory unlocked GSM mobile phone. It allows you the facilities of changing your SIM card at will and using them.

Utility of the devices in emergencies

Satellite phones may come up handy in emergent situations like when you are stranded during a travel for some reasons and want to send important SOS messages to your contacts, and where mobile networks are not available. It is also very useful where direct satellite phone communication is available, and though a little bit costlier compared to normal phone systems, the clarity of communication and the speed of access far out weigh the little disadvantage in terms of the cost factor.

Play any DVD from any part of the world with a region free DVD player

A region free DVD player is immune of the affects of standard syndrome. Normally all DVDs cannot be played on all players. Different regions in the world use different standards for a DVD like PAL, NSTC, and SECAM, used in Europe, North America and France respectively. A region free DVD player will play all types of DVD irrespective of whatever standard they might follow and the standard specification problem gets affectively addressed with a region free DVD player.

Get a real provider

So cell phone, SIM card, satellite phone, and a region free DVD player, all can come handy in different situations and on different occasions. It may be required for communication, for messaging, for business pursuits, for enlivening memorable moments, for emergencies and for virtually anything. With these devices you will not feel that you are out of touch with your near and dear ones and you are still a part of your known environment. But the million dollar question remains as to where you get the devices. Who is going to provide you all these devices and ensure quality of the products? The simple answer is that you need a good and reliable provider who can give you all your choicest gadgets at a competitive price and also provides real after sales service. Once you select a real reliable provider, 80% of your problem is solved. The remaining 20% will also be solved as soon as you get acquainted with the handling of the devices.

Beware of unscrupulous traders

Urge for procuring all the devices that makes an otherwise secluded life on constant move really enjoyable, has driven many decent citizens in the past to grab such articles wherever available. In doing so, many of these innocent and unsuspecting citizens have walked into the booby trap laid by unscrupulous merchants who are prowling in the wings. These dishonest merchants make the innocent and unsuspecting customer believe that they are providing them with a real factory unlocked cell phone, or a real low-charge SIM card, or a real region free DVD player, and the customer gladly parts with a lot of his hard earned money to have these devices. But at real time, to their dismay, such customers find that all these devices are not what they claim to be. Instead, they find that these are really career endorsed mobile and support only the network of the provider and not others. SIMilarly, the SIM card provided may not support other areas and even if the SIM card can be used, it may be used as a roaming cell phone only charging the poor customer almost five times of what they would have paid towards call charges under ordinary circumstances. The region free DVD player provided by such fraudulent traders may turn out to be one which provides only limited region free services like playing PAL standard DVD on an NSTC TV but not the vice versa and when it comes to playing SECAM Standards, the DVD player does not support it at all. There are millions of such incidents that have happened with decent people all around. Visit us at www.planetomni.com

A Good Case for iPod

Just got that new iPod? Or just thinking about buying one?

Here’s something else to think about. Whatever else you do with your iPod, protect it. The average iPod owner spends $40 on iPod accessories like external speakers, alarm clock docking stations, FM transmitters, and car chargers. Many of them are not spending any of that money on protection. There are any number of iPod skins and cases on the market. There’s bound to be one to suit you.

Why does your iPod need protection?

Because, as great as they are, iPods are notorious for screen scratches, click wheel scratches, mirrored back scratches and even faceplate scratches.

Just handling your iPod can cause scratches. And they are somewhat fragile when dropped on hard surfaces.

You want that brand spanking new iPod all scratched up? You want to risk a million pieces if you happen to drop it on the sidewalk? Of course not, so give it a good case. At least a quality ’sleeve’ or ’skin.’

Silicone skin

This is one of the more common types of skin. They come in a variety of colors, sizes, textures and even a few different shapes. The good ones are pretty tough and the really cheap ones are … well … really cheap. The cheapies tear easily and never seem to fit like the good ones. The good ones are a bit more expensive but worth it. None of them, however, offer much protection from that nose-dive onto concrete.

Leather or Vinyl Case

Leather and vinyl cases are gaining in popularity. They range from plain vanilla all the way to Bling! They provide some shock protection but not such good scratch protection unless they have some other type lining and a clear panel to protect the screen. Fashion seems to be the key with these cases.

Hard Case

Typical hard cases are made of plastic or aluminum. Again, they range from the cheap ‘junk,’ through the medium priced ‘adequate,’ all the way to ‘iPod armor.’ They also cover the gamut from ‘boiler plate’ to elegance in appearance. Naturally, the aluminum cases tend to be better protection than the plastic. But some plastic cases are quite strong and shock absorbing. Pay particular attention to how the case fastens. Armor is not much good if the latch won’t stay put.

Summary

With any sort of case, you’ll probably want to access the headphone jack, docking port, lock button, etc. without removing the iPod from the case. Most of the good ones allow all that, but look carefully. Some, believe it or not, cover them up. Buy the best protection you can afford. Your iPod deserves it.

Do You Know How To Copy A DVD?

Many people ?burn? copies of their CD?s - Compact Discs - making copies of music, e-books, data files and just about everything else. But what about DVD?s? Do you know how to copy a DVD and is it legal?

Let?s look at the legal issues first, and then we?ll examine how you go about copying a DVD — a movie, for example, to a writable disc. Many of us are used to copying files to a CD - using ?drag and drop? technology, which involves dragging some files across your computer screen and releasing them to the drive where the CD rests. But copying a DVD involves quite a bit more and there are legal problems to consider.

Before we even get started on exactly how to copy a DVD, you need to become familiar with two important terms - encryption and copyright law. LEGAL DISCLAIMER TIME: Now, I am not an attorney and do not play one in real life so make sure you consult one in your area of residence before doing anything on your own with this information. From what I understand it?s perfectly legal to burn a copy of a DVD - if it?s for your private use in your own home as a backup copy. For example - say you have an extensive collection of DVD movies, but you are worried about your DVD?s getting scratched from using them so much - so you may want to make copies of all these DVD?s and keep them in a safe place in case some of them get scratched. That?s fine.

But if your DVD is encrypted (as most movies are) - most software that allows you to make copies won?t get around the encryption. (There are multiple sources that offer this type of software now, but it?s up to you to find them.) Bottom line - if it?s encrypted, you?re not supposed to be able to copy it. Why? Because copyright law says you need to pay a royalty to the person or studio or whoever made the DVD - otherwise you?re guilty of copyright infringement. If you copy only those videos for your own use, you?re probably ok, but start burning them and selling them on eBay you?ll be in trouble with the Hollywood studio system and the government in a hurry.

In the interest of protecting ? well, their interests, Hollywood studios came up with a little encryption system known as CSS or Content Scrambling System. This encryption doesn?t have anything to do with free speech issues - it?s all about money! The Hollywood studios figure that if they put all their cash into making the movie, the least you can do is pay them a royalty. It?s amazing how many people aren?t willing to do that, which is why the software was developed that allows you to go around the encryption. Otherwise your DVD copies just would not work.

Now, of course the Hollywood studios and a very few others have the so-called ?keys? to this system - after all, they designed it! But the rest of the non-paying public has to depend on those free, independent spirits out there to come up with a way around that encryption, as indeed they did.

Circumventing this encryption is generally known in the biz as ?ripping? a DVD (and of course copying the files to your computer hard drive) - see, you?re already well on your way to becoming a computer geek - ?geek talk? and all. If you rip the DVD to the hard drive of your computer, you can tell if the size will fit on a regular DVD. If not, you?ll need to make one of the choices available to you - such as compressing the data, removing or splitting part of it so it takes up less space.

When choosing a software package that will allow you to rip DVD?s you?ll need to choose one that fits your needs. By that I mean there are packages out there that will allow you to do it all - rip, compress, remove or split data, in addition to utilities that will let you play with the settings on your DVD and affect the quality of your final copy. If you?re not a computer geek, you may not need all those extra features - the quality between a typical DVD and one that?s been ripped is usually very slight to the average user. If you plan on going in the geek direction, you may want a higher quality end product - in other words, if you?re picky, choose a program with more features that gives you more control.

For a more detailed version of this article in html & pdf format go to: http://www.mx123.com/cms/2006/09/10/do-you-know-how-to-copy-a-dvd/ we are always adding new content to the site so come and check us out!

Setting Up The Ultimate Home Theater System

After a long day, or a long week, some people want to just watch an entertaining movie. Well, it isn’t that much of a hassle, if you go every once and awhile. For movie enthusiasts, however, that may be a problem. Depending on where you live, the movie theater may be far away and cost $10-$15 a ticket. Unless you have lots of time and money, seeing movies every time a new one comes out, might not be the best move for you. Home theater systems may be the solution, they bring the feeling of a movie theater into your home.

So what is a home theater system? Basically, it is an assortment of electronic components arranged together to give you the best movie experience possible. First came the VCR, which let the user view videos of past movies with out the hassle of going to the theaters. Although it was a nice thing to have, it still did not present the same quality of going to a movie theater. It was just a movie on your home television. Now in days, technology is so advanced that we can have a fully functional movie theater in our homes. It will be of course smaller than an actual theater, but quite similar quality.

Setting up a home theater system is not as hard as a person may think. Of course, there are professionals that may install the system in come cases. It will be difficult, if you have never hooked up anything technological in your life. The surround sound is probably the top feature when it comes to the theaters. If you want to have a quality home system, your top job will be getting the sound system just right. Another task that you must perform is getting a quality screen. This will depend entirely on your likes and dislikes. What ever your choice, make sure the screen is of decent length at least 25′ long ways. The next big decision is buying a DVD, or other video viewer, to play dvds on. This is not required, you may have pay per view television via sate-lite and do not need a dvd player. Just make sure that whatever screen you are watching, it is the clearest picture possible. Then again, you can buy all this in a set and save yourself the time of buying individual pieces, but that will cost much more.

The home theater system will not only save you money in the long run, but will be much more enjoyable. Imagine the comfort of stopping a movie, going to the bathroom, getting something to eat or drink, etc. If a home theater system is something you want to look into, be prepared to pay a few hundred to possibly a few thousand dollars, which will be decided by what you buy. Just remember that your buying a movie theater that is going to fit inside your living room and give you the same quality as a full size theater. Can you really pass that up?

The HDTV Experience - Accept No Substitutes

With everything in life, people want to see clearly. Whether it is a street sign or your glasses. You want to be able to see crystal clear in order to fully understand, or enjoy, it. Well the same thing goes for television. You do not want a blurry picture, when watching television. You want the best possible picture you can imagine. With a plain old T.V and basic cable, odds are you are not getting the best picture that could be achieved. With High Definition TV, this goal can be reached and the fact is even higher quality sound and picture are just around the corner.

HDTV, or High Definition Television, means the broadcast of television signals with a higher resolution than traditional formats (NTSC, etc.) allow. To watch high definition TV, you need 3 separate things. First you need a local cable or satellite HDTV station, which is your source. Then you need a way to receive the signal, such as a satellite or cable service. Finally, you need the main part, the HDTV television set. There are 2 choices when it comes to the set, integrated HDTV, or HDTV-ready set. The HDTV-ready set is the set that you would buy if your not quite ready to have HDTV, but are slowly getting there. The set will not be high definition until you buy an HDTV receiver. That is why it is known as a HDTV monitor, because it doesn’t come completely ready, you will need additional equipment. The integrated HDTV has a digital tuner, which means that if a station near you is broadcasting in HDTV, you can watch the station in high definition, with the assistance of an antenna. The most basic way to receive HDTV, is through your satellite service. Lets face it, your not getting HDTV to watch the news, so odds are if you are getting HDTV you have cable or a satellite service for quality programming.

The common mistake people make is thinking that HDTV works on every channel. Not all programming offers high definition, and the ones that do are paid for it. Another misconception is that if you have a high definition television set, you have high definition, which is incorrect. There is an additional charge for HD programming. So depending on your satellite service you might be paying $50-$100 dollars extra per month.

Visual displays on a television work by drawing a picture, dot by dot and line by line. How much information the screen can display is called the resolution. The standard amount of vertical lines on a TV is 480, and that is why high definition is so much more sought after. HDTV offers a minimum of 720 lines, but can be as many as 1,080. So in terms of seeing more and seeing better, a high definition set is the way to go.

The average household, with 2 or more people, watches at least 30 hours of television a week. That is a lot of programming and movies that could have a better resolution and overall quality. Although not all stations project HD, a large amount do. You can enjoy television without HD, and many people do. An HDTV set is expensive both upfront and over time, and might be outdated in a matter of years with some new technology that will be developed. One thing is for certain, your picture an overall television experience will be much better and more enjoyable.

Do You Really Need A Portable DVD Player?

Have you ever been on a long boring bus or train raid just looking out through the window with out anything to do? Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to watch your favourite’s movies on your way to your destination instead? A portable DVD player allows you do just that. A portable DVD player is a small DVD player with a small screen attached to it allowing you to watch movies where ever you. Now you might be thinking so what, Portable DVD players are nothing new. That?s true but it’s only in recent time that they have become inexpensive. Today almost everyone can afford a portable DVD player.

A portable DVD player plays regular DVD discs or ‘Digital Video Discs’. A DVD disc is 4.72 inches (120 mm) in diameter and can store 4.7 GB of data. They work in the same way as CD discs but utilize a shorter wavelength laser and can therefore store a lot more information on a disc than your standard CD.

Most Portable DVD players can read regular CDs as well but is still not suitable to replace your portable CD player. This is due to the fact that even if DVD players can read CDs they are specialised to handle video media and will as such not handle music as well as a unit specialised for musics. This does not need to be a problem and you might very well feel that the sound quality in a portable DVD player is good enough to use it as a CD player. You will however feel differently if you are a ‘Sound snob’. CD players can’t play DVD discs since reading a DVD requires more advanced and sophisticated technique than the technique in a CD player.

One my wonder why portable DVD players hasn’t been available at low prices for a long time when the technique used is similar to the technique used in CD players and portable CD players have been around forever. The answer is simple. A portable DVD player requires a large amount of miniaturization of technology to make it possible to fit so much into a small container. A portable DVD player does after all not only contain a DVD player but also a flat screen, all of which should fit into something that you can easily hold in one hand.

I mentioned earlier that portable DVD players today have become cheap enough to allow the average Joe to get one but does one actually need one. The simple answer is no. You could just bring a book or a deck of cards along with you on your trips which both would give you something to do on your trip and are considerable cheaper than a portable DVD player. A portable DVD player could however give you a lot of fun and a cheaper model could very well be worth considering since they can bring you some fun even though you don’t actually need one. And sometimes one just feels like spoiling oneself with something one don’t actually need. I know I do.

DirecTV vs. Dish Network - Choosing The Best Deal

With all the deals being advertised lately between DirecTV and Dish Network choosing the best deal for you or your family can become quite confusing.

While both companies offer satellite TV offers, each company varies in the types of channels and programs offered for various price points.

But armed with the right information you can make an informed decision on which satellite TV package will give you the most bang for you or your families budget.

When choosing between either DirecTV or Dish Network you must start out with first knowing what it is that you really are looking for from your satellite subscription.

Like, are you shopping for the most available channels, the best sports package, the most music channels or the best package that includes free premium movies or hardware? Each question must be addressed before comparing as each satellite package may offer different options that may or may not meet your particular needs.

If you are really looking for the best sports package, then it doesn’t mean a hill of beans if one of them offers you 80 free music channels does it? Once you decide what is really important to you and your family, then you can get down to really shopping for the package of your choice.

A simple way to compare each satellite offer is to start a little spreadsheet or word document. Divide up the columns in a way that makes sense for easy comparison of the various programs being offered by both DirecTV and Dish Network.

One column could be the amount of channels being offered, the next column could be what is included in the offer, like a free dvr or three months free service, or maybe a cash rebate.

Always make up one column that you can copy the url of the sites that you have visited so that once you have determine which offer is the best you can find that site again. It would be a real bummer if you found a great deal but forgot which site you found it on when you went back to find it.

Also take note if each or any of these pricing packages are promotional offers? Sometimes the prices quoted in big letters are only good for a short period of time, like 3-6 months and then they can increase substantially if you are not careful.

So always read the small print on each offer and make notes on the periods of these special deals.

By taking a small amount of time up front, you can end up saving a substantial amount of money and receive a better deal for your money by doing the proper comparison of the various DirecTV and Dish Network packages being offered currently today.
