Part 1.
Ever wondered how to choose good web hosting, well let’s see if I can point you in the right direction with a few things that you should consider.
With deals starting at $2.99 per month, you must be sure that you are getting what you need, both now and in the future. Remember what you need now could be a different story six months from now!
So you want web hosting for your home site for friends and family to keep in touch and put some photos on, then a basic package will do you fine as long as it helps you with uploading your site via FTP and maybe some free web site design software.
However if you run a business or are into internet marketing then you need something completly different, and if you plan to have adsense sites then you need to be careful how you choose!
Here is what you want as as minimum from your web hosting:-
500MB of disc space
10GB of monthly traffic allowance
Unlimited pop3/smtp email
Unlimited auto responders
Unlimited Mysql data bases
PHP
Unlimited sub-domains
MS front page support
Web site traffic stats
Your own cgi bin
Web based control panel
Password protect directories
Java/JavApplets
Web site building software
And a good amount of ready to install scripts, so you can set up a Blog in minutes, or set up Ecommerce so you can sell your product online.
Now if you are unfamiliar with any of the terms above don’t worry I am not trying to blind you with the tech stuff, just trust me as your online presence grows you will need all of the above at some point and some!
To give just one example Data Base’s(Mysql), if you go with a real cheap host say $2.99 per month you will get 1 Mysql data base, fine if you only need one, but what if you need 10. You will find that you have to pay for the other 9 and this can add up on it’s own, if you need even more addons to your $2.99 Package can become $14.99 per month package!
Some companies will offer you a cheap web hosting package just so they can upsell you at a later date, don’t get caught out by this as they can be very difficult when you ask them to change your DNS (domain name servers).
Always make sure you can change your own DNS when registering your domain name, that way you can move your web hosting account at will if you are not satisfied with your web hosting provider.
Make no mistake about it, you only get what you pay for with web hosting. For example another thing that some web hosting providers do is load their servers heavily with accounts so they can get the most money out of each server they have. This is ok, but as the server ages it get’s slower just like your home PC it gets Full and things take time to load, it’s just the same with a server but when it Crashes your site goes down!
In conclusion it’s upto you what you choose, just make sure it’s what you need….send them an email, and see how long it take’s them to get back to you with a concise reply. It will normally reflect how quickly they will get back to you with a support request!
See you in part two, where we will cover it step by step.
On a final note, if it looks too good to be true then it probably is!

Windows and UNIX are in fact two different systems and of course we are referring to computer systems. A web host uses computers, (we shall refer to them as servers, just computers, but sometimes larger) to host websites, and all computers need a operating system, so Windows and UNIX are the operating system.
The Windows used is normally Windows NT or 2000 and of course as you know Microsoft charges for it’s software, while UNIX is an open source operating system, this means that the original creators of the system have given up the rights and anyone can use it, change, improve or do anything they want with, free of charge.
From this we already have to main differences, Window hosts are more expensive and UNIX is more reliable, because it as been improved by thousands of anonymous people.
Most probably you are reading this in front of your computer which most probably is operates on a Windows XP, have you noticed that it sometimes, it freezes, and the only solution is to restart it? UNIX is much more stable, robust, time-tested, flexible platform for a web server.
But Windows servers have also it’s positive sides, they are compatible with Microsoft applications, and fully support Microsoft FrontPage, Microsoft Access and MS SQL, they also offer advance-programming environments and features such as Active Server Pages (ASP), the ASP.NET framework, Visual Basic Scripts, MS Index Server, Macromedia’s and Cold Fusion.
Windows operating system require little or no experience in web development to get advanced features working very quickly because of better graphical user interface (GUI) Software such as Microsoft’s FrontPage is specially developed for the webmaster to decrease the website development time and efforts.
Lets go back again to UNIX, they support FrontPage, Flash, Shockwave, Real Audio/Video, Cgi Scripts, Perl, PHP, SSH (Secure Telnet), MySQL, Web-Based Control System, Anonymous FTP, Web Site Graphical Statistics, Web-Based Email System, Miva/XML, Cold Fusion Perl, JAVA, PHP, C, C++, Miva, Shell Access and other wide verity of feature like Telnet and SSH that provides lots of flexibility and freedom in managing file and directories, but some of this require advance knowledge of Unix commands in order for you to customize the scripts to match your website needs.
Because of the nature of UNIX, (open source) and the people who love it, there is on the WWW freely available software and scripts, again bringing the cost down.
Concluding which one is the best, it really depends what you need, if you need high uptime, security and not so expensive then go with UNIX, if you need to run Windows applications like, MS Access or the MS SQL SERVER then Windows is your choice.

At this day and age almost everyone has a website. Many hosts offer great deals with reasonable prices, but if they offer exceptional deals with extremely cheap prices, beware before you become a victim. Web host scams are plenteous, so take caution.
You should research the host before anything. Go to forums and look for ratings and reviews before you commit. Search for the host name on a search engine and find out as much as you can about them. Examine their site carefully, and get to know who they are. There should always be a section that says ‘contact us’ or an ‘about us’ that has some kind of contact information. If you have no way to reach them, how can they be held accountable for things that may go wrong, or even help you with a problem? That’s a major red flag.
Always read the terms of service before signing up. Do a close reading and be sure that you understand payment terms, what you are required to do, and what they promise to offer. You should not have to keep track of and report down time. If the host is shady about uptime, don’t sign up. Make sure the domain name is registered to you and not to the hosting company. It’s not a real sale and you don’t own it if they keep the registration. This is also away of avoiding legal tracking. They can deny the sale if you don’t hold registration rights. You should have the option of paying monthly, not just annually. Although there is nothing wrong with an annual payment, be sure that you have options so that you can be sure the host won’t take the money and run. You should also be able to get a refund of the first 30 days of the membership. If you are not satisfied, you should be able to cancel and get your money back. Non-refundable deals are usually poor deals.
There is no such thing as unlimted bandwidth or data transfer. Check the terms and conditions for the actual limits. Data transfer costs webhosts money, so there is no way that they can successfully run business and make a profit at all with extremely low income. If they promise you limitless space, it’s technically impossible. It is a certain con for your money.
You should try to find a web host located near you. It will speed up the download of your site for viewers, give greater access to technical support, and assistance with service complaints. Extravagant offers for extremely low prices are a pretty obvious sign that the website is a scam. If you feel that you have been scammed, you should contact your local district attorney. Otherwise, research the site and don’t give your information until you have taken the precautions described above. Have a good time, but play it safe.

Moving your website from your current host to another hosting provider could be easy or difficult depending on the type of your website. Although it can be a daunting task, you may have to do it because of several reasons. Maybe you need some features which are not provided by your current hosting provider. Or maybe you need a company with a quality web site hosting service capable of helping you when something goes wrong. Whatever the reasons, the process of moving hosts and transferring files should be accomplished smoothly. This article contains some important steps you can take to move your website to another hosting provider.
Here they are:
- Old Account
Don’t close your old hosting account so that your frequent visitors can still access your website. Besides, you can still receive incoming emails until the moving process completely finished.
- Backup your files
Make sure you have backed up all of your files (and directories) correctly. Note that there are two types of transfer mode, ASCII and binary. Use the correct transfer mode when downloading the files to your hard drive. Normally, you will have to choose ASCII mode for transfering text files and binary mode for transfering image files. If you use WS-FTP, you can select the ‘Auto’ mode so that the software will do it for your automatically.
- Keep the important information
Write down the important information about your old hosting account (e.g. billing history) in case you need it as reference in the future.
- Open an account in the new hosting provider
After making payment, normally they will send an email to you that contains your login information (username and password), your temporary URL and their DNS information. Just keep it.
- Login to your new Control Panel
Using your username and password, login to the control panel (e.g. CPanel). Create the email accounts you have already had in the old hosting provider.
- Uploading
Upload the files to the root directory (e.g. public_html) of the new hosting server. Once again, use a FTP software such as WS-FTP to do it. Before you do it, don’t forget to setup the software with your new host name (e.g. ftp.yourdomain.com), username and password. Don’t forget also to transfer the files correctly (ASCII/binary).
- Testing
Through web browser, visit your website with the temporary URL. Notice whether all files have been uploaded properly and all links work.
- Transfer Domain
Ask the old hosting provider to change the DNS of your domain name. Tell them the DNS information of your new hosting provider. If everything is OK, you will be able to access your website with your own domain name in a few days. Note that if the old hosting provider gives you a username and a password to login to the domain manager of a domain registrar (e.g. enom), you need to go to the domain manager in order to setup the new DNS addresses.
- Close the old hosting account
After the move is done and everything works properly, contact the old hosting provider to close your account.
If your website requires a database support and/or use a server-side script, there are some additional tasks you may have to do.
- Make sure the new hosting server supports your script. When I moved my website to a new hosting provider, I asked them first using their chatting facility whether their server supported a script I intended to use before using their service. By asking them like that you will also find out the response time they take to answer your questions.
- You may have to backup your databases. With CPanel, you can do it using the ‘Backup and Restore’ facility. You can also use the import/export facility in PhpMyAdmin to back them up. In order to avoid incompatibility problem, use both methods. Talking about database, note that a web hosting provider with shared hosting pan usually adds the name of a database with an extra prefix. If both of your old and new hosting providers apply the rule, you can try to ask the new provider to give you the same username as the old one.
- Don’t forget to modify the configuration file(s). You may have to change the information about your database or the absolute path.
If you meet any troubles, don’t panic. Check everything from the configuration files to the .htaccess file . If needed, contact the support staffs to help you. Some web hosting providers even offer script installation for their new customers.
By moving from one host to another quickly and efficiently, people can still find your website without realizing what you are doing. Although you may meet some difficulties, moving from your current host to a new one that provides better features and supports is something you will never regret.

After the growth of over 12 years, Web hosting industry has the ability to offer wide variety of options to satisfy the needs of different types of websites. When picking a web hosting company for your hosting needs, there’re a few things to consider: 1) what types of server you need - shared server, dedicated server or server co-location; 2) storage, 3) bandwidth, 4) flexibility of installing customized application; 5) uptime; 6) technical support etc..
Regardless of what type of company you own, web hosting is one of the first crucial steps to achieving success in the internet world. While web hosting provides the space for content to be displayed, it also comes with technical support and a series of other features. Nevertheless, depending upon what type of site you have, you may need specific features. For instance, CBT companies like New Horizons training need a server that will be able to deal with heavy traffic. After all, computer training classes are now the newest trend on the internet. With computer education always being search for on Google and other popular search engines, it is no surprise that these CBT companies have special web hosting needs.
When picking your web hosting package, it is important to ask yourself a series of questions. For instance, if you were creating a computer education website, you need to analyze how much traffic you will be getting daily. If you feel that it will be a large number, it is smart to go with a dedicated server. With this type of hosting, a website owner gets their own server. This allows them to have as much freedom as they want, including a ton of bandwidth, great server response and their own IP. Unfortunately, this type of package is extremely expensive. Nevertheless, it is a wonderful feature for a serious company such as computer training classes. If you do not have the budget to do so, there are other alternatives such as a shared server. This will still allow you to have a great site, but you will not have as much freedom. Luckily, once you start generating a lot of extra traffic, you can upgrade.
Another crucial factor to keep in mind is the amount of storage you need. If you are going to be providing large software files and CBT programs, you will need a lot of space. A+ certification is a standard certification for computer technicians in IT industry. A+ training is the proof that you have received the adequate knowledge in computer hardware and operating systems. After all, the more clients who download these programs, the smaller your bandwidth will become. In the end, a minimum amount of bandwidth will result in a non existent site. Therefore, it is important to purchase a large amount upfront. Also, if your students are constantly accessing the website for material and lessons, it is important have extra storage. The last thing you want to do is end up with unhappy customers!
After you have factored in these important aspects of web hosting, it is imperative to look at extra options such as easy to install applications. Many of these CBT programs require you to install flash and java applet software. Therefore, it is vital that you can customize and provide these easy to install applications for your customers. If they are difficult to use, potential customers will move right onto the next best company.
No matter what type of website you have, web hosting is essential for its success. For a computer education program, it is even more important to have a large amount of features. From extra bandwidth to a dedicated server ? the opportunities are endless when you are trying to impress your customers. Luckily, the more successful you get, the easier it is to add onto these packages. Once you have pleased your students, the ability to affordably have a dedicated server will be a piece of cake.

Many clients have talked to us about their online business and they would like to have some suggestion in choosing a web hosting company. There are so many companies and packages for them to choose. Here we will listed out some factors that need to be considered.
#1 Disk Space
Disk space is depends on the size of your web site. So, have a look on your web site folder and see how much disk space it takes up on your computer. You should always get more space than what is taken up on your computer. For example, if your web folder is 200MB, you should probably get 250-300MB of disc space. This extra space allowed you to further expand your web site and put more materials there. Remember that you need to think about what kind of materials you planned to add later. If what you plan to add is some flash animation or some audio/video file, you’d better to get some more buffer.
#2 Bandwidth
Bandwidth is the amount of data transfer that your web site can use. If you plan on having a massively popular site with a large amount of files, then you should have a high bandwidth. For casual web sites, bandwidth is not as big a factor. Again, consider cost and try to have more bandwidth than you need, not less. It is also important to check the bandwidth for local and overseas.
#3 Web site speed
Web site speed is seldom taken into consideration. Web site speed is a really important factor. If your web host has a very slow speed for all of its web sites, then you may not want to go with that host. People won?t stay around at a page forever. If you want many people to visit your site, having a fast speed is very helpful. You should check with the web hosting company and ask them to provide a list of their sites. You can then try to access to see the response of these sites.
#4 Database / Programming Language support
Database and Programming Language support are important if you plan to have a dynamic website and interact with your customers. Currently, most web hosting provides support for database and programming language, but there are great variety on database and programming language. You should check and pick the one you plan to use.
Of course the above factors are depend on how much you want to spend on it. It’s always difficult to take all the best. You should think about your own case and find out the best fit. For example, you have a text-centric site with little photos and target in local market only, you may find a hosting with little disk space, enough bandwidth for local (overseas is not important in this case) and normal web site speed.
#5 Technical Support
Technical support is one of the important factor you need to consider. But how to know their services level? You can test by sending them an email with some questions or just make a phone to their support hotlines. If they respond quickly, this is a good sign. If they cannot provides you answers, you’d better find another one.
#6 UpTime
The more uptime they guarantee, the better. 99% uptime is the minimum acceptable standard. You’d should Look for 99% plus guaranteed uptime.
#7 FTP Access
You need an FTP program to transfer files to the server. You should seek for an unlimited and unrestricted FTP access, otherwise it will troublesome to maintain your website.
#8 Control Panel
Most web hosting company will provides a web based control panel for you to maintain your web site. You should looking for one with a easy-to-use interface.
#9 Statistics Program
A good stats program is handy if you want to keep an eye on how many visitors you are getting, where they are coming from, referrers, top entry and exit pages and so on. Some companies offer excellent stats programs as standard while others offer basic stats but you have to pay extra for advanced statistics. You should ask the company what kind of statistics information they can provide.

So you are looking for the best web hosting options. You casually slide on over to google or your favorite search engine, and type in ‘web hosting’ and what do you see? As of this writing, something like:
Results 1 - 10 of about 780,000,000 for web hosting
Hmm. Ok, your on your lunch hour at work, thinking you can knock this out in an hour tops. However, you just realized that if you start now you might wade through those results in a mere… light year or 2.
At this point, most people take 1 of 2 options:
1) Stare blankly at the screen while their brain continues to melt down as they ponder how they will ever figure out which web hosting company to trust with their website and money or
2) Calmly and cool-ly type the words ‘web hosting review’ into their favorite search engine’s cuddly little query form. If this is you, then smart move. Come to think of it (wait for the ah-ha moment…) that’s probably how you found this article. Pure genius.
Anyway, let’s boil it all down. Your decision needs to be driven by a few basic criteria:
How much storage space do you need?
Disk space has gotten so cheap that this is almost moot. For a personal web site, almost any basic package you buy will have more than most people ever need. Maybe even more than most small business websites need. Basically, space is cheap nowadays, but keep it in mind if your site will have vast numbers of articles or content, media files, or in some other way will use lots of space.
How much transfer space do you need?
Ditto. See above. Except, you do have to pay attention to disk transfer space if your site gets to the point of having incredible gobs of traffic each day. If so, and your hosting package only includes a limited amount of transfer space, you will be charged for the extra usage, or else your site will lock up or become unavailable to site visitors. If you do experience this problem, upgrade your account to get more transfer space - and then contact us via our Feedback Form and explain in detail how you managed to get all that traffic
How reliable is the web host?
This means: ‘what is their guarantee for up time?’ And that means: ‘can they guarantee at least 99.9% up-time?’ If not, move on. For a great discussion of web hosting uptime guarantees and what they really mean.
What features do you need?
Okay, this could get really long, but I will do my best to be brief. Which features you need is driven by what kind of website you are planning. Is it a personal site for friends or family or a professional web site? Will it be created with MS FrontPage? Will it be a forum or community site? Windows based or Linux? Do you require an Apache server? Will you be using SSI’s (server side includes)? Will your site contain, or be primarily, a blog? I think you get the idea now, so I will shut up about features. If you don’t know what these terms mean, don’t worry about it. Basic packages abound that will likely exceed your wildest dreams about the features you actually need.
How competitive is the pricing?
Now this is a good one. It is a buyer’s market people, so keep that in mind. Their are thousands of web hosting companies (maybe even millions, as in 780,000,000 ) Regardless of exactly how many, it is a-lot, and if you remember Economics 101, you will recall the law of supply and demand, which states roughly that ‘…the more saturated the market is for web hosting, the greater the features, disk space, guarantees, and technical support will be for a lower price than you can imagine…’
Web Hosting has become so affordable that you have no excuse not to launch that web site or blog you have dreamt about all of your life (or at least since the mid 90’s) with all kinds of professional features and capabilities, for a price that amounts to peanuts (or a mere pittance if you prefer.)
Once you have answered these questions, you will be much better armed to recognize the web host that has the most to offer you for the lowest price.
Now you see? That wasn’t so bad, and you probably have another 24 minutes or so on your lunch hour, so go get a sandwich, or better yet, get cracking on reading the web hosting reviews at 5pcom.com - And stop oozing brain all over your keyboard.

So you’re thinking about using a free web host instead of a paid hosting service are you? Well before you dive right in, you might want to consider a few things first.
But rather than give you the cold hard facts, I’ll illustrate my reasoning’s with my colorful, yet insightful little story that includes a free web host and a lot of beautiful women.
It all started one afternoon when I was surfing around the web when I suddenly got an idea. I said to myself: ‘Mike, let’s see how much traffic you can generate to a website that you built in one day.’
That seemed like a simple, yet interesting challenge. But what would I make the site about? What topic could possibly drive tons of visitors to a website that was built in just one day?
I thought about this for awhile and then it hit me. If I really wanted a site to attract lots of visitors quickly, I should make it about beautiful women. Not a porn website or anything like that. Just a simple picture page site featuring scantily clad females.
So off I went, scouring the web for pictures, downloading them, organizing them, and finally making thumbnails. I created 5 pages of 20 thumbnails each and linked all the pages together.
Then I registered my site at the first free web host I could find, and set up my 1-day site challenge.
Once it was done, I honestly had no clue if I would attract any type of traffic at all. But I figured it was worth a shot so I decided to leave my site alone and check back within a month.
Well, a month came and went, and once I checked my stats, I nearly fell off my chair.
With absolutely no advertising of any kind I had received over 3,000 unique visitors.
How did that happen? To this day I still don’t know, but needless to say, after seeing that number 3,000 on my stats page, two things happened to me.
First, I was completely shocked. I had never expected to receive that kind of traffic from a site I built in just one day, especially where I didn’t advertise it at all.
The second thing that happened was that it gave me a sense of motivation like I’ve never felt before.
While this was the most basic of websites, it still attracted visitors. Granted, having the pictures of beautiful women didn’t hurt, but still, it was something that I created and it received attention.
This did a number on my self esteem (basically sky rocketed it), and from that day on, I vowed to make my site one of the best on the web.
I added tons of images. I changed the layout several times. I went out and traded links (all done manually) with other webmasters, and my traffic sky rocketed even more!
I reached a point where I was getting 400 unique visitors a day! That’s 12,000 people coming to my site every month!
I spent months planning on how to make my site better and get even more traffic! It was like an addiction. I couldn’t stop. I wanted more visitors! More traffic!
Everything was about my site and how to make it better. Heck even my homepage button on my web browser was set to it.
But then, one day I woke up, turned on my computer, clicked my homepage button and guess what? My site was gone.
After cursing in 4 languages, and eating 2 boxes of cookies I finally calmed down. What in the world happened to my site?
Well, since my site was hosted on a free web host, I was allowed very little monthly bandwidth. I had received so much traffic that I far exceeded my bandwidth limit by a factor of twenty.
My free hosting provider never bothered to warn me or contact me. They offered no alternate solution to my bandwidth hogging website. They just deleted it.
All of my hard work was gone in just one day. It’s ironic since it was gone in the same amount of time that it was first built. Now you understand why free web hosting doesn’t mix with beautiful women.
