Depending which part of the world you come, from you may here about natures ravaging winds being called tropical cyclones or typhoons, but where I come from in the USA, we know them as hurricanes. Hurricanes can be highly destructive to say the least. Most of the world probably witnessed this more recently with Hurricane Katrina, which was recorded as the costliest and one of the deadliest hurricanes in the history of the United States of America.
The hurricane season is well known to the state and residents of Florida and as a consequence they are well equipped and well prepared for any eventuality. This did not seem to be so with Katrina in August of 2005. An estimated 80% of New Orleans was devastated by the immense flooding which was created by the storm surge caused by this giant of hurricanes.
It’s not the purpose of this short piece to look for someone or something to blame, as lessons have probably already been learnt from the powers that be, but I just hope that the United States governments and responsible departments do everything in their power to ensure such a catastrophe, as was caused by Katrina, never happens again.
So just what are hurricanes and why do they occur in certain parts of the world and not others? Well, without going into to much meteorological detail, a hurricane is basically a tropical storm so therefore can only be found in the tropics, namely the Southern Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and in the eastern Pacific Ocean. But a hurricane is not just any tropical storm. In order to reach hurricane status it has to have sustainable winds exceeding 74 miles per hour. Katrina, by the way, sustained winds of up to 140 mph.
Hurricanes occur over oceans where the water is 27?C (80?F) or above, and the air has to also be extremely humid and thick. Therefore, the perfect conditions for a hurricane to form are basically warm water and humid air. As this warm air rises around the storms center, it cools. Moisture then condenses, clouds are formed, and the rains begin. The condensation releases latent heat and this heat then powers the hurricane.
A characteristic of a hurricane is the eye and the eye of the storm can be anything from 4 to 25 miles in diameter. There is an eerie silence within this eye and often clear blue skies and light winds can be usual. Those caught up in a hurricane know only too well when the eye is above them, and although it can buy a bit of valuable time to move, help, or rescue victims, many often describe this moment as a deafening silence.
If you are interested in learning more about hurricanes, there are many great online resource is that will provide you with facts, details, and Q & A on all things related to storms.

Hurricane Florence started out like all Hurricanes do, as a Tropical Depression and then a Tropical Storm and at that time she was 2,000 miles from Miami and only blowing at 39-49 miles per hour and then by that weekend she grew into a Hurricane still so far from any type of landfall few were worried. Yet she then became a Hurricane the second notable one of the Cape Verde 2006 Atlantic Tropical Hurricane Center.
Weather meteorologists assumed she would and the Hurricane Hunters data confirmed what the NASA and NOAA satellite data had already considered, that this could become a larger storm. Indeed she did. The Beginning Saga of Hurricane Florence was uneventful and she advanced forward at a mere 13-15 miles per hour making here trek across the Atlantic Ocean towards the Leeward Islands.
She kept growing wider and wider and tropical force winds extended some 420 kilometers from her center and kept growing during that full moon on the Thursday prior to becoming a full-fledged Hurricane and that folks was the beginning saga of Hurricane Florence as she grew into womanhood and looked for a landfall to make her marks in the record books and that she did, as we all know what happened after that.

It looks as if Hurricane Florence is capturing the attention of our Island Neighbors on Bermuda. Will Bermuda take a direct licking from Florence? Will Bermuda take it in the shorts? Well many have predicted that Bermuda would get hit this year. In fact I emailed a gentleman from Bermuda earlier in the year stating such as our online Think Tank had been discussing this as well.
It looks like there will be lots of clean up to do this year in Bermuda and she will get the brunt of Hurricane Florence as the Hurricane strengthens to 140 mph and quite a low pressure eye center as well. The National Hurricane Center predicts it will be very close and this will severely impact the island, as the airports, ports and much of the island had to shut down, but that also means there will be nowhere to go or hide, after all it is an island remember?
Even if Hurricane Florence does not make actual landfall the storm is very large and they will get a long period of Tropical Storm force winds and gusts into the Hurricane range and that is not making residents happy either. Oh no not again say some islanders while others say this is part of what we have to pay to live in paradise and so we must deal with it. Indeed there is also a chance of flooding with 5-10 inches of rainfall expected on the narrow roads, which often become rivers during such storms in Bermuda. Consider this in 2006.

Although the 2006 Atlantic Tropical Hurricane Season has been a little less than anticipated it looks as it the Wild Fire Season in the Western United States is more than expected and in fact may set an all-time record for the most acreage burned. In fact it is quite possible it might do this with the middle of September 2006.
Also realize this does not even include the later Santa Ana Winds fire season in California, which could increase the total burned for the year to be over 1-2 million acres over the record previously set. In August and September we saw many fires in California, Nevada, Oregon, Idaho and Washington State. In the second week in September we saw an average of 30 wildfires at any one time and approximately half were somewhat out of control or very partially contained.
Does this mean Global Warming is affecting the Western States and Wildfire Season? Or does it mean the wet winter had grown more brush, which dried out due to heat waves early on in July and early August of 2006? Some of both say Global Warming Alarmists, and even those who do not go for the Global Warming scare, they do know that 2006 has been and will continue to be a record year for wildfires. So, please consider all this in 2006.

Just when you thought the 2006 Atlantic tropical hurricane season was a bust and the home team was winning, now we find a brand new season in play. Hurricane Florence has made a mess of Bermuda and got to first base. And now tropical storm Gordon is at-bat and considering a double or triple category hurricane as he takes the first pitch.
And Tropical Depression # 8 could turn into a Tropical Storm within a week or so and when it does it will be Tropical Storm Helen or Hurricane Helen. So has this season gets going and the game continues we have; Hurricane Florence on First, Tropical Storm Gordon At-Bat and Tropical Depression # 8 on Deck.
No one knows exactly what will happen including NOAA, The Hurricane Hunters, The Miami Hurricane Headquarters or even The Weather Channel. Although you can bet they will be watching as the bases become loaded and the game continues in the third inning of play, as the Cape Verdi Islands visiting team looks for a grand slam, homerun.
Tropical Storm Gordon is a slow base runner, but is expected to get to at least first base as a category one hurricane within the next few days. And if these last two storms are any indication that Tropical Depression # 8 may just show us a little extra team spirit. Please consider all this in 2006.

Previously we provided information on what weather radios are and their purpose. This article pertains to how weather radios work. Once you have selected a radio that fits your needs, you need to learn how it works. Most radios have a power cord that you can plug into the wall to operate the radio. They all have or should have battery backup in the event of a power failure or if it is a portable radio that you can carry with you. These radios broadcast weather information on seven channels or frequencies throughout the US. By reviewing the FIPS codes you can find the closest tower that transmits in your area. Afer you find that frequency you should hear a continuous broadcast for your area. If the radio has S.A.M.E. technology as we discussed in the previous article (and it should) you need to program it. You can program your county, several adjacent counties, or all counties in the coverage area. The instruction book along with the FIPS codes will allow you to do this.
In the event of an emergency in the county or counties you have programmed the radio will sound an alert tone followed by the weather watch or warning along with pertinent information concerning actions that you should take at the time of the alert.
Watches and warnings are broadcast based on weather conditions in your area that may be worth watching or paying attention to, or by taking emergency shelter in the event of a warning. Many watches are based on radar conditions and weather forecasts that the local NWS office is monitoring. In the event of a warning (tornado, flash flood, or severe thunderstorm) the information may be obtained by what the forecaster sees on doppler radar or live reports from trained weather spotters or local emergency personnel. If the the NWS issues some type of watch for your area you should be aware that conditions are possible for that type of weather. If they issue a warning you should follow the instructions the forecaster gives via the weather radio which may involve taking shelter immediately in the event of a tornado or move to a safer location in the event of flooding. More people are killed in the US by floods that any other weather event. These watches and warnings should be taken seriously and you should have a plan for immediate action in the event of a warning.
The next article will contain information about weather radios that are available, their cost and their functions. Weather radios may be purchased at most store and advanced radios may be purchased on Ebay or via the internet at various site such as www.btproducts.us

Apparently Hurricane Gordon is getting a little persnickety out in the Middle of the Atlantic and has grown from a Tropical Depression into a Tropical Storm and continues to grow. It made Category Hurricane one status and then past into Hurricane Category II and Category III in less than 36 hours out in open sea. That is the bad news and the good news is that it will not be affecting land it appears.
Why is Hurricane Gordon so tough? Why is it the first major Hurricane of the 2006 Atlantic Tropical Hurricane Season? How did Category III Hurricane Gordon grow so fast? Does this mean the 2006 Atlantic Tropical Hurricane Season is soaring?
Indeed generally the Cape Verde Hurricane Season really gets ripping around September, as that is usually the peak of the Atlantic Tropical Hurricane season. Hurricane Gordon has been assisted by warm water surface temps and strong stormy conditions coming of the coast of Africa and we should not be surprised at its strength at all say Meteorologists and Hurricane weather experts. Hurricane Gordon is being tracked by satellite and its low-pressure center indicates it should remain a strong Hurricane for a while. Please consider all this in 2006.

Nature is the very essence of all the entities that make up the universe. Mother Nature is the mythical personification of nature that has created, managed, distributed and even regenerated all the ecosystems in the biosphere. From ancient times, images of women that represent ‘mother earth’ or ‘mother nature’ are timeless. In fact, long before people begun to record history, goddesses were worshipped, as they were associated with fertility and agriculture. Even today people use the name of nature as being equivalent to a divine power that is able to guide the adaptation of species when these are subjected to natural environmental change or when they suffer serious damage due to the changes human exploitation has produced.
Along history and during the human evolutionary process, the world has witnessed countless numbers of peoples, tribes, ethnic groups, cultures and empires. In fact, a variety of cultures the common denominator of ‘mother nature’ is illustrated in the scripts of different civilizations like Incan, Assyrian, Babylonian, Slavonic, Roman, Greek, and Indo-European fertility religions. Some were governed by matriarchies, with groups of women in many communities assuming enormous responsibilities-taking charge of their people’s survival-always aiming in finding ways of providing them with food and drink, helping them to grow and develop, and taking care of the elderly and the sick. Women, in short, have taken on the responsibility of guiding people’s development, whatever the costs.
Since its early introduction and although the term ‘mother nature’ is not a scientific one, it has been used in science-related papers in effort to explain the natural phenomena humans have witnessed. Storms, river floods, tornados, and winds are some of the extreme natural phenomena related to the term ‘mother nature.’ But apart from the plethora of extremely powerful incidents, the miracle of birth, tenderness and kindness are also illustrated with the use of the same term.
Social and anthropological studies discuss the interaction between the terms ‘man’ and ‘nature’ in an effort to portray the relationship between mortality and ever-going change. But the environment, as discussed by experts entails the force of natural progress and the role women have played in this evolution has generally been examined in a variety of scientific experiments. The use, management, exploitation, administration and, of course, the care, of natural resources has historically been attributed to the role of women in a society and just as nature itself is in charge of management, distribution and problem solving, so have women faced and continue to encounter the need to manage, distribute and solve whatever comes in their way so as to ensure the welfare of their families.
According to ancient Greek myth, Demeter, the earth mother, had the power to produce or deny from humankind the fruits of the harvest. This representation of women as nature is directly related to the fact that they are able to conceive life and that their daily actions profoundly affect the natural, social, economic and cultural environments they live in. In fact, until today, active women are the main promoters of the protection of natural resources-whether in the big cities of industrialized countries or the most marginalized communities. They experience today’s dire environmental situation and directly suffer its consequences. This is the reason why women have often inspired a spirit of leadership, activism and action to find a solution to common problems. But nevertheless, taking care and protecting ‘mother nature’ is a responsibility that must be shared and assumed equally by women and men alike.
