This park opened in 1992 and pays homage to the early days of baseball. With its graceful wrought iron embellishments and brick fa?ade, Oriole Park set the new standard for modern ballparks and is still considered the best park in the country by purists. Architects incorporated the B&O Railroad warehouse into the design of the park, creating a pedestrian area called Eutaw Street where fans can stroll before and after the game. Players who actually hit the warehouse with a home run receive a commemorative plaque on the spot. For a relatively new park, Oriole Park has its share of baseball history. On September 6, 1995 Cal Ripken broke Lou Gehrig’s record of 2,130 consecutive games, one of baseball’s most treasured records.
Fenway Park, Boston
Fenway is one of only a few remaining original ballparks built in the early 1900s. With its distinctive ‘Green Monster’ left field wall, Fenway presents a challenge to even the best hitters in the game. Ballpark aficionados will appreciate the manual scoreboard that has been used since the park was built in 1912 and the only ladder in play in the major leagues. History buffs will revel in visiting a park that has been home to such baseball greats as Cy Young, Ted Williams, Carlton Fisk and Carl Yastrzemski. At one time, Fenway was also host to the longest drought in World Series history however, the Red Sox finally won the Series in 2004.
Wrigley Field, Chicago
Another historic ballpark, Wrigley Field hosts the Chicago Cubs, the ‘lovable losers’ of baseball. Wrigley is more famous for the historic moments that have happened there than for its comfort or amenities. In fact, the ballpark did not have outdoor lighting until 1988. But it was the site of Babe Ruth’s famous ‘called home run’ in 1932 and Kerry Wood’s 20 strikeout game in 1998. Wrigley is the home of many quirky traditions including flying a flag bearing a ‘W’ or an ‘L’ atop the scoreboard at the conclusion of every game.
AT&T Park, San Francisco
Widely considered the best ballpark in the country by fans and players alike, AT&T Park (formerly Pac Bell Park) was built in 2000. Privately funded by baseball fan and Giant’s team owner Peter Magowan, AT&T Park offers fans spectacular views of San Francisco, an innovative children’s play area and the best public transportation access in the major leagues. Home runs splash into San Francisco Bay where boaters and kayakers float, listening to the game.

In April 1992, Camden Yards opened it?s doors as a brand new $100 million facility that was designed under the architectural guidance of HOK Sport and constructed by Danobe Construction. Located just two blocks from Babe Ruth?s birthplace in downtown Baltimore, the centerfield at this 85-acre facility is also the site at which Ruth?s father once operated Ruth?s Caf?. In the beginning, there was some debate over the name to be given to the new ballpark. Some felt that it should be named Oriole Park after it?s tenants, the Baltimore Orioles, but others were set on calling it Camden Yards. In a pleasing compromise, the park was ultimately named Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
Just like every other ballpark in Major League Baseball, a number of memorable events have been hosted at Camden Yards. Among them, the 1993 All-Star game was held here. In September 1995, Cal Ripken Jr. awed fans by competing in his 2,131st consecutive game and, ultimately, breaking the record set by Lou Gehrig. The following year, in 1996, Eddie Murray hit his 500th career homerun. In addition, the only no-hitter ever pitched at this ballpark was thrown by Hideo Nomo in 2001.
Spectators who visit Camden Yards will be greeted with a variety of amenities, including the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame memorabilia, the Camden Club and sports bar, a cafeteria and gift shop. Additionally, fans can enjoy a stroll on Eutaw Street, which houses cement imprinted bronze baseballs that are designed to commemorate homeruns that have been hit at the facility. The design is Camden Yards is in amenity in itself as it has revolutionized the way that new facilities are constructed. A combination of steel columns, beams and trusses have made it a classic, while it?s 48,000 spectator capacity have made it accessible. Although it?s concrete trusses, a brick facade, natural grass playing surface and an asymmetrical playing field have served as inspiration to modern facilities being built, Oriole Park at Camden Yards itself was influenced by other ballparks, including Fenway Park, Ebbets, Forbes and Wrigley Field.
Baltimore Orioles fans can also participate in regular tours at Camden Yards, which includes a closeup look at the suites, scoreboards and control rooms, press levels and the dugout. Public tours are given daily with private tours available upon reservation. For those who desire an even closer look, perhaps a meeting with one or more of the Baltimore Orioles players or coaches would fit the bill. Time permitting, baseball notables may sometimes be found signing autographs up until 45 minutes prior to the opening pitch.
Collectors who wish to request an autograph from any one of the players on the Baltimore Orioles roster should send their letter and a SASE (self-addressed stamped envelope) to:

These baseball tips can maybe help you think of ways to keep your baseball training and drills productive in the off-season.
This is especially important for catchers who may have just put in a very long summer season behind the plate. Catchers have a greater number of skills that they need to practice compared to other players on the team. This can be a problem if there is a long layoff between the end of the summer season and the beginning of the High School season. The catchers now have to do a lot of training in a short time to get sharp on the throwing, blocking and footwork skills that catching requires.
It’s never too early to start the catching training and drills. The trick is trying to keep a young mind and body motivated for most of the year if this is their only sport. The summer season for our team was long last year. It went right into fall ball. Some of the guys also started a conditioning program. There was not a lot of spare time left for our catchers to practice what they needed to and when I did start with them, there was a quick sense of general fatigue and I could tell the guys were ‘just not into it’. I couldn’t blame them.
I initially started getting some of the catchers’ time after their conditioning, batting, tee work, etc. Bad news. I next tried to find some time for just catching drills and training…no bats. But with their busy schedule, an hour here and there still was too much. I’d hear stuff like, ‘You said it would only take a little bit last time and we were still there almost an hour.’ This in itself was the problem.
Here is the baseball tip for this article?I call this little idea, or training method, ‘20 Minutes And Out.’ I used it for catchers but obviously you can adapt the idea to anyone. The whole thing is strictly psychological, and it worked great! All I did was set a time limit?I just picked 20 minutes because I knew that I could get a ton of footwork reps done in 20 minutes. I’d only work one catcher on any given day or night and work only one type of drill in that training session, whether it was some type of footwork, blocking receiving or throwing.
I’d tell them something like, ‘Look, meet me at the training center and we’ll do footwork only, and only for 20 minutes. Guaranteed. Twenty minutes and we’re out of there. The thing is, you gotta work hard, be focused, no messing around and we’ll get some good work in and leave.’
Well at first, some of the catchers didn’t believe me. But I did this, stuck to it and the results were great.
Sometimes they didn’t even realize how fast 20 minutes would go. They’d be ready to do some more and I’d say, ‘Five more good ones, and we’re done.’ And sure enough, we’d leave?no matter what. That’s the key. Promise 20 minutes and get out. If they think they want to stay longer, don’t. Tell them you have things to do.
Here’s what I see happened and why I think it worked so well.
- The time limit guaranteed an ending, always. That’s big to teenagers.
- As soon as the catcher saw me sticking to the 20 minute rule, he believed that he would truly be done soon and not only didn’t mind going and doing the drills, he actually looked forward to it?all because he knew that it wouldn’t drag out.
- Since the time limit was relatively small, a catcher would really work hard in those 20 minutes and because of the ‘believable’ guarantee he really didn’t mind.
The end results were great because of the focusing on one drill each session. It was always a pretty good, intense workout and yet it wouldn’t kill them. One catcher in particular improved his footwork tremendously because that’s what we’d do each time. Tons and tons of reps for 20 minutes a shot. He really worked hard and got into it. Consequently, his throwing improved a great deal also.
Think about these baseball tips, try something like this and see what happens. This will make the short workout more enjoyable and at the same time you’ll get a lot done. And it’s all because of the ‘20 Minutes and Out’, really. It’s all psychological. Stick to the 20 minutes, no matter what. You’ll be amazed how your players respond and what they can get done. You’ll appreciate the short workouts too!

For a guy that hardly ever plays the field, David Ortiz sure gives the Boston Red Sox a lot. Even though Ortiz is usually nothing more than a designated hitter, he still finds more than one way to contribute to his team. Plus, he can also do a good job at first base if it is asked of him; don?t think that Ortiz is simply a one dimensional player.
But when it comes down to it, Ortiz really shines when he is at the plate. At this point in the season Ortiz is batting .287. This is not the best average in the world, but it is more than adequate for a guy of his stature. But Ortiz brings plenty of bat in the power department. In addition to his batting average, Ortiz has knocked in 121 runs, and hit 47 home runs. These are great numbers regardless of who you are, or what team you play for. To go along with all of this Ortiz has also scored 99 runs himself. This just goes to show you that Ortiz does much more than simply hit the long ball.
At 30 years of age it appears that Ortiz is still going strong. His bat is as lively as ever, and without having to play in the field Ortiz gets to save his legs day in and day out. This will go a long way in ensuring that Ortiz has a very long career.
If the Red Sox are going to win the World Series in 2006, Ortiz will have to play big in the playoffs once again.

One of the best pitchers in the league this season has been Carlos Zambrano of the Chicago Cubs. Even without great run support, Zambrano has been able to get the job done time and time again. This is saying a lot for a guy that is pitching for a team that has been out of the playoff race for quite a few months.
At only 25 years old Zambrano is one of the best up and coming pitchers in the league. He stands at 6? 5? and weighs in at 255 pounds. It is safe to say that this helps him a lot when on the mound. Not only does his size give him more power, but it also allows him to last longer into the game as well.
Zambrano currently has a record of 14-5; the best in the National League. In addition he has an ERA of 3.31 to go along with 180 strikeouts. All of this adds up to Zambrano being one of the best pitchers in the league. When Cy Young voting comes around at the end of the season Zambrano will probably get a lot of consideration; especially if he can keep up at the pace he is going at.
Zambrano is one of the young guns in the game of baseball. Being that he is only 25 years old, Zambrano will be around for quite a bit longer. This is good news for the Chicago Cubs and their fans; that being if they can sign him long term.

Alfonso Soriano is becoming one of the best players in the National League year in and year out. Not only is he getting the job done in the field, but at the plate Soriano is performing in a big way as well. The bottom line is that Soriano is a mainstay in the league, and if the Washington Nationals continue to build around him they will be in great shape for the next few years to come.
From his position in left field Soriano gets the job done every game of season. He may not be as flashy as some other guys, but Soriano has been known to make some great plays while roaming around the grounds in left field.
But even though Soriano has a great glove, his bat is really what impresses people that watch him. Soriano has an average of .294, and has also knocked 41 home runs out of the park. To take this a step further Soriano has driven in 82 runs, and stole 34 bases. If that is not a well rounded baseball player I do not know what one is!
Soriano is 30 years old meaning that he still has a few good years left in him at the least. The Nationals are going to try to keep Soriano around as long as possible so that they can have a top notch player to build around. If they can keep Soriano in town for a couple more seasons minimum, there is a good chance that they will be able to make a run at the playoffs soon enough. Nationals fans are looking forward to that day!

If you were asked who the best hitter in baseball is, what would you say? Generally speaking, the majority of people would answer Albert Pujols. For the last couple of seasons Pujols has been the best hitter in the game, and it does not appear that this is going to change anytime in the near future. The fact of the matter is that Pujols is one of the best hitters the game has ever seen, and he has proven this at the plate time and time again.
When it comes to being a well rounded hitter, Pujols is the exact definition. Not only does he hit for power, but Pujols also hits for average as well. All of this put together makes Pujols a dangerous hitter no matter where he is batting in the line up. At this time Pujols is batting .323. And to go along with this his power numbers are 38 home runs and 107 runs batted in. If that is not enough to prove that he is a great player, Pujols has also scored 94 times and stolen five bases. And of course he does a great job in the field from his post at first base.
And the best thing about Pujols is that he is only 26 years old. This means that he will be around for quite some time, and will surely take the St. Louis Cardinals to the playoffs more times than not. One thing is for sure; the Cardinals will not be letting go of Pujols anytime in the near future.

Do you know who the catcher is for the Minnesota Twins? If not, you may not be alone. But when it comes down to it, Joe Mauer is one of the best players in the game. That is right, Joe Mauer! Never heard of him?
Mauer has really made his mark during the 2006 season. Even though he has been a solid player in the past, Mauer has really shown this during this season. He is currently batting .356 which is the best in the entire league. This has gone a long way in helping to lead the Twins to the top of the standings. If Mauer can keep up his hot bat throughout the rest of the season there is a great chance that the Twins will see themselves in the playoffs.
And in addition to what Mauer brings to the plate, he also does a great job handling the pitchers on his team. Many people overlook how much responsibility a catcher has. Game in and game out Mauer makes sure that he gives his pitcher the best chance of going home with a victory. The bottom line is that Mauer is a team player first, and out for himself second.
Being that Mauer is only 23 years old the Twins should be able to rely on his services for quite a long while. It is safe to say that the Twins will not be out looking for a catcher anytime in the near future. Mauer is about as good as it gets.
