Technology has effected education. Many innovations have made a positive impact on how students learn and build success in the classroom. However, when it comes to technology, combined with the subject area of math, one would thin these two would be a perfect match. Needless to say, this has not been the case.
Math faculty members have found that instruction through technology has not been easy. Although on-line learning is more flexible and allows students additional opportunities for reflection, it hasn?t proven friendly to instructors. The prominently test-oriented distance learning systems do not handle the diagrams and formulas necessary for math instruction. In most cases, instructors need to go through a series of steps to make communication/instruction possible.
An interesting fact was explained in several studies related to the human brain in the 2004 International Journal of Science Technology, written by Glenn Gordon Smith and David Ferguson, concerning visual short term memory. For both verbal and visual information, short term memory can hold a maximum of four to seven items. However, that four to seven item limit can be increased up to 16 items, if the items are presented purely visually and in a connected way. In other words, a properly developed diagram can greatly increase the retention of comprehension. This is important to know, when teaching math. The ability to instruct through diagrams and formulas is paramount to student skill acquisition and success.
Since diagrams, formulas, and notation are useful for math instruction, it is equally important that these tools can be easily accessed through online instruction. Up until recently, this hasn?t been true. But today, new technologies are being developed to help. These innovative online tools are being used in colleges that enhance math instruction through the use of two way communication through diagrams and math notation.
Math instructors have found that these distance learning tools give students more opportunities to get involved. As a group, students solve math problems. Students are given a single step to complete and explain the process used. Then, another student proceeds with the next step and so on. The online tools allow each student to use different colors to help differentiate the steps and reveal each person?s contribution. This group approach to instruction involves all the students, without the fear of standing in front of others in class. It also gives students pride in their own work, through visual and verbal modes.
It has been noted that unlike the traditional community college student, the online math student is likely to be a mature female. These students are returning to school and at the same time, holding down a full time job. Providing safe opportunities to gain knowledge through online math tools has proven helpful. Multimedia motivates students to be attentive and stimulated. Each year, innovations are developed. Higher education needs to keep up on these advances. The online tools are powerful components to successful online math courses. It is important that colleges meet the needs of employers in math related fields. This can only be done by keeping a pulse on new advancements in math online instruction.
The health field has been growing in leaps and bounds. Community colleges are striving to produce students, who are able to communicate confidently. Nurses with effective communication skills are advocates for their patients and themselves. Colleges are examining the traditional passive lecture method of instruction and trying out new strategies. Schools need to provide an active, meaningful, and authentic setting for students. Online courses and technology has helped community colleges move in this direction.
Nursing students today have access to e-mail, bulletin boards, online courses, tests, case studies, and clinical skill videos. Students have found that the curriculum online is also enhanced. Courses are more interactive and prepare students to be self reliant. One of the most advantageous aspects of online instruction has been the implementation of tests. The licensing exam, although not given by the community college, is accessed through a computer. Online students taking exams do so through the computer. These students find their levels of test anxiety diminishing.
Nursing, along with other occupational programs can have low enrollment and be costly. Online classes can give community colleges the opportunity to provide these classes, until the enrollment catches up with the demand of these professions. By sharing with students existing technology, community college faculty are preparing them for the modern-day workforce. With the skyrocketing need for these professionals, online distance learning education is a valuable means of instruction.
Although not all technology used in the classroom proves favorable. One study showed that faculty websites do not improve students? perceptions of teacher credibility and learning expectations. Instead, no data could be found to support the belief that a website affects the student?s perception of the teacher or course. Suggestions were made as to why this finding was discovered. One reason could be that although students have knowledge of the Internet, they still want face-to-face contact with their instructor and fellow students.
Technology is here to stay. It is time for educators to begin assessing which tools and strategies work the best. Implementing the right technologies will benefit all students.

Many colleges are searching to find a method of detecting students, who would become successful in a web-based distance learning situations. Today, students need flexible leaning environments, in order to meet the demands of work and family. However, many times students who enroll in these web-based distance learning classes do not succeed. Locating a tool/assessment that could identify students and guarantee success in a web-based class, prior to enrollment, would be a great benefit to both students and community colleges.
The study conducted by Monica DeTure and discussed in the 2004 American Journal of Distance Learning looked at two forms of tests. The first was a cognitive style identification test called the Group Embedded Figures Test. This test showed the varying ways that learners perceive and interact with instructional environments, strategies, and media. Students were then placed into two categories: field dependent or field independent. Those identified as field dependent rely on those around them and their environment when learning. Field independents rely on internal cues and are autonomous with their learning. In earlier studies, it was found that students that are field independent are more competent in search and navigation tasks involving a computer, when compared to field dependent students, who are often times lost and confused when placed in a computer based learning environment.
The second test was the Online Technologies Self-Efficacy Scale. Self-efficacy has long been shown to be a valuable factor related to student performance. Thus, when a student?s level of confidence is raised, their performance levels are also increased. This second test placed students into two categories: students who had a positive self-efficacy, when working in a technology learning environment and the other being students, who had a negative or less than positive self-efficacy when working in the same environment.
It was discovered, more often than not, that the field dependents were students with a lower self-efficacy and the field independents held a high self-efficacy, when related to placement in a web-based distance learning class. The field independents were more comfortable in this environment because there were more opportunities for autonomous learning and fewer group dialogues. However, field dependents were at a disadvantage in this atmosphere because of the lack of communication and the focus of independent learning settings.
With all of this information presented, the findings would appear to be simple. However, this wasn?t the case. Whenever a study deals with people, there are factors that aren?t always seen at first glance. The findings revealed that field independent students, who have high technology self-efficacy, did not receive higher grades than the field dependent students with low technology self-efficacy. These findings also conclude that the combination of Group Embedded Figures Test and the Online Technologies Self-Efficacy Scale are not good indicators of whether students will achieve success in a distance learning class. The reasons for these findings were not easily seen, but the results were clear. However, one thing is known, more studies must be conducted.
With the boom in distance learning and web-based classes, it will become increasingly important to discover why some students succeed and others do not. Although the findings were not able to identify students, who would benefit from flexible learning environments, the quest for locating these tools needs to continue.

For a number of us, the option of physically attending a traditional school campus is not feasible; this is one of the many reasons why enrolling in a distance learning online school may be ideal for those of us who prefer time convenience over travel.
Distance learning online provides students with ease of access. More commonly, online schools are typically economical and offer comprehensive course studies and degree programs much like conventional academic institutions.
Mind you that distance learning online is not for the faint of heart. Individuals who are contemplating enrollment should consider a few principle matters - first, if you are serious about attaining your online degree or course, you must realize that you will still have to manage your time to get the best benefit from your educational course. Are you self-motivated? While distance learning online schools do offer the handiness of being available 24/7, ultimately you will still have to dedicate a fair amount of your time to your studies; usually about 12-15 per week.
Next comes balancing your coursework with personal responsibility: If you?re going to enroll in a distance learning online course of study, you will need to set a schedule for yourself so that you can fulfill your own obligations and still commit yourself to your online classes. Study time should be free from distractions and should be a productive environment for learning. If you can?t seem to free yourself from interruptions at home, perhaps a nearby library may be sufficient.
And finally, you should be prepared to become interactive with your online instructors and fellow classmates. This is important as it allows you to become personable not only with your teacher, but to share views and fact-finding opportunities with your virtual social group as well.
Now that you have a basic guideline into what is expected of you in a distance learning online course, the next hurdle is finding the appropriate online school that will meet your individual needs. Obviously, if you are seeking online certificate programs, you will want to review schools that offer these courses. The same applies to those who are seeking online degree programs. Be certain to review curriculums and determine whether or not online support will be provided to you. (Note: Most quality online schools will extend support to their students during the e-learning course.)
Furthermore, check to see if the distance learning online program is accredited. In addition to reviewing student testimonies, verify whether or not financial aid programs are offered; if so, determine if you are eligible. Also, some online degree programs do require prerequisites prior to acceptance; do you meet the qualifications?
In general, distance learning online schools can be a constructive and convenient means to acquiring a fulfilling education (and online degree). Is it right for you? That depends on how motivated you are in gaining the professional and personal success you feel you deserve.
